Been thinking about this….

If you’d been caught spying 50% of the way through the season, what would the punishment have been.

With goal difference even a 9 point deduction would mean you are still in the playoffs

The EFL have set a strange precedent as the 4 points are for the following season, not the current. They’ve then kicked you out the playoffs, surely that means if anyone is found guilty again they’re eliminated from the playoffs, if yes then Wrexham would be next in line.

The punishment is going to be extremely hard to replicate for whoever gets caught next time, specially if it’s midway through a season
Pretty sure no one else will be stupid enough to either break the rule or get caught!

I just can't see any other way in which Tonda doesn't get a footballing ban from the FA now. He may genuinely be telling the truth, but that doesn't take away from the fact that you might have repeatedly broken rules because of your own ignorance.

In all my annoyance about this, I do think there is a possibility this is a wide spread practice and we have only been caught by virtue of the fact we are so ****ing amateur.

It would be funny if they set this precedent and then examples start popping up left, right and center next season meaning points deductions all over the place.

Yeah they've gone extremely harsh without setting a precedent unless it happens in the play offs again.

I can almost guarantee you that every team in the EFL finds ways to gain a competitive advantage, even if it is 1-2%. We aren't the only ones doing it, but if this punishment sticks, we may well be the last.

I think the play offs and the league season are technically separate competitions. So it's expulsion for the bang-to-rights spying on Boro and a 4 point deduction for the other games and the likelihood it's happened more often.

Very good point. I don’t think they’ll ever be able to replicate it. Can see our fans looking back at this is disgust when another club simply gets a fine for the same crime in the future sadly! We’ve been mugged off by a decent media campaign from Boro & the mob mentality that followed!

The fact that this is now one of the biggest punishments in football history is the laughable part.

115 charges for Man City? Keep playing and winning trophies.
Leicester won an FA Cup and Championship title while massively breaching FFP, gaining a significant on field advantage all season? 6 point deduction.

We only have ourselves to blame, but if the EFL sets this kind of "precedent" moving forwards, clubs will be in a lot of trouble for doing a lot less.

Particularly if it turns out everyone does it

There is a case for a complete reset for the Club. The one started in 1885 has been destroyed by this and all the faithful fans over those years, the people who managed and played in our greatest moments have been completely besmirched.
It should be a completely new set up and a genuine attempt to separate what follows from what we are now suffering from. Like many others on here I’ve had to tell others in my family that we’re not going to Wembley after all. My oldest son who is autistic and wears a Saints shirt when watching them on TV or listening to radio commentaries, has gone into a bit of a shell, simply cannot understand it. Right now I wouldn’t feel responsible for my actions if I was face to face with those responsible for this mess and ask them how they would go about explaining their actions to someone like him!!
Hull City fan in peace.
I hope all your family are ok, but particularly your oldest son.
My oldest Grandson is autistic and likes to occasionally go with me to games, and even when he isn’t going he likes to talk about the fact he has done and that we go together.
I’m even having to try and grow an apple tree from seeds he kept from a free apple he got from the kids fruit box at a game! :emoticon-0111-blush
Different point really but the club have been fantastic with him (sensory room access, dedicated parking spot, showing him round days before games so he knows where he is going and sitting before anyone else is in the stadium etc)
I really feel for you, and can imagine how hard this is for him and you.
Sending you all my best wishes.
Take care

Expulsion plus 4 points deduction points to a 12 point deduction in a normal season?
Not necessarily, I think they'll say expulsion is the only sporting sanction available for a knockout competition like the play offs and the 4 points is for the spying on Ipswich and Oxford (and probably others but that can't be proved).

Saying that they do it in other countries is no defence, it is cheating and says a lot about your character if you do it. Nobody knows how much benefit has been gained throughout this season from it and they obviously felt it was worth the risk.
The whole episode has left me feeling a bit grubby and I want to feel pride in my club competing in the right way.

I still don't know how Middlesbrough can be put through to the final, when the EFL let two games go ahead (as I've mentioned many times). If they beat Hull, you'd think they would make a case that they lost to a team that shouldn't have been in the final?

I’m going to give this some serious thought over the coming weeks and months, but I am thinking about quitting match day thread activities over all this.

People are going to start to think I’m in on the cheating and I’m not sure I can risk ruining my exemplary behaviour and profile being tarnished on Not606 due to the activities of Southampton Football Club.

Gonna be weird next season when we're still on an unbeaten run after making the play offs and not going up <laugh>

Yep. Tonda admitting he has done this will be the end of it and him. No way the appeal gets overturned because they will just make the point that the punishment is simply a forefeit of the game that we cheated. Nothing more than that. Its inconceivable that nobody knew we were breaking the rules and we've been caught doing it, so unlike FFP where accountants can move a few million and hide a few million and argue over minutiae for years we are basically ****ed.
