Also according to AI

No, the Royal Navy has significantly fewer ships today than in 1982. During the Falklands conflict in 1982, over 100 Royal Navy vessels were deployed, with around 55 destroyers and frigates. Today, the total fleet is roughly 60–70 vessels, with only about 13-19 principal surface combatants (destroyers and frigates).

Key comparisons to the 1982 fleet:
  • Total Ships: Over 115-127 ships were available or deployed in 1982. Currently, active commissioned ships number around 63.
  • Warships: The number of destroyers and frigates has decreased from 55 in 1982 to only 13 as of 2026.
  • Submarines: Submarine numbers have also reduced, decreasing from 29 in 1982 to 10 in 2019.
Seems a different answer every time

No need, absolutely nothing going on around the world, or even around our shores these days :emoticon-0112-wonde

Not my specialist subject tbf, but a quick quote for context ".... during the Falklands campaign the RN had around 50'ish large warships, it currently has 20'ish. And whilst the ships that we have today are way more technologically advanced (as are other country's), they still can't be in 2 places at once. Bearing in mind that however many ships we have, at any one time at least a few of them will be in dry-dock?". If we didn't have our legacy nuclear subs we'd have fallen way down the league table. No critiscism of the brave men, but our forces are a shadow of what they were and what they need to be, given where we're at nowadays (not where we could be or should be in terms of a European Army, Nato, US relationship, etc), while the world has been becoming an ever more dangerous place.
I'll keep saying, we're in a bad place. The above plus, police overwhelmed, trading standards overwhelmed, most hospitals overwhelmed, doctors, dentists, prisons, ...... the list is endless. Meanwhile taxes, obvious and hidden, contine to rise at an unsustainable rate, along with cost of living, welfare bill, etc.
Not enough people working . Added to that minimum wages mean a lot of workers are a cost to society . If 600k people can get the max benefits upwards to £32 k nothing will change . Equally greedy employers or share invested companies who have absolutely no connection to employees will milk the opportunity to pay bugger all to maximise their profits / dividends .
I’ve said it before until you make goods and sell them outside this country you are just recycling the economy internally and that is a rapid downward spiral - retail park near me absolutely rammed on Monday - is that all we are a nation of ‘ junk buyers ‘ ? because that money goes abroad ultimately to China , Indonesia , The Philippines etc . Lots more to this but those are the basics .

Clearance of the former Debenhams building has commenced and construction will soon be underway, transforming the former store into 178 city centre apartments, as part of DBG Group Holdings Limited’s £75m investment into the city.

The building on Prospect Street has stood vacant since 2021 but is now undergoing redevelopment by DBG Group.

The project was made possible by Hull City Council agreeing new lease terms with Gateway Hull Limited and DBG Group to allow for residential use, alongside the retention of an element of ground floor retail use.

According to AI we did have fifty back then but actually have 63 now
Not quite the same but as original minority said we have more subs
I know he won’t want to believe it he doesn’t like facts n stats and thinks he’s won when he puts his stupid laughing face on

And what are we actually needing more n more for? We aren’t at war or likely to be
Oh ye those immigrants he probably wants to use them on them
You might want to dig a bit deeper Into the detail and then you'll realise you are posting bollox.

Re. other posts. ...

I do agree that the fact we have nuclear subs means we remain a 'power' (at least when they work!), but our forces are now a bit of a joke for a so called world power (no offence to the brave personnel). And as for the claim that we're in some sort of natural "lull" because we're part way thru updating our fleet is truly laughable. I also agree that the more realistic solution is some sort of European joint force (without a return to the EU) with EU and non EU countries or something similar.

Some need to take off their Guardian glasses and wake up to the reality of what's happening to our country on so many levels.

What is happening
I love these posts

And I love how reading the guardian is an insult
Do I agree with all they say?
No
Do I prefer to be on the side of a paper that fought for the families and the truth around Hillsborough and not blamed the fans like the **** you read
Yes yes I do
Or the paper that saw Hitler for what he was and was against him from the start? Or the scummy ****ing daily mail who lauded him
So I’m happy with my choices

Yep, what is happening?! Truly bizarre! Hillsborough and Hitler? :emoticon-0112-wonde

Re. Hillsborough; same side as you. What **** do I supposedly read that puts me on a different side?

I wasn't around when Hitler was so can't really comment, other than to say I don't read the "scummy ****ing daily mail"!! I gave up on it probably around 20 years ago.

Why is it laughable?

Do you want to keep all the old vessels running, fully staffed and maintained, whilst the new ones are coming into service, thus requiring you to employ and train all new staff to run them, then make the old vessels' crew unemployed when these frigates are decommissioned... You're paying double wages and double pensions, plus the costs of maintaining vessels that are tens of years old and being sold/scrapped for that very reason.

All navies that aren't in a full scale war have lulls when updating to new fleets for this reason. Every country has the equivalent of a NAO that argues the budget with the military's needs.
The cost of having a standing fully equipped navy is enormous and entirely unsustainable. The UK military isn't seen as a joke - it's adapting/adapted to different scenarios in a changing world.

If the UK had a 'better' Navy right now, what really would be different...

And all done by not wanting to pay any tax.

A post about Hull City Centre - wtaf is wrong with you?

Isn't that where the Post Office is, if so, what'll happen to that?
A city centre Post Office is looking for a new location after the shop it operates from announced it was closing.

TGJones, in the Prospect Centre, Hull, announced earlier that it would be closing as part of a national restructuring plan.

The Post Office has a branch within the store and confirmed it would cease trading on 11 July.

A spokesperson said it would look to relocate elsewhere in the city and would "welcome interest from retailers looking to host a Post Office branch".

Do the P.O. pay for the hosting?

The former WH Smith store (that became TG Jones after the takeover), in the Prospect Centre is closing down, it's the second largest store in there.
I cut through Prospect centre quite a bit as I use the Barber outside for my beard, I was only thinking the other day how it is such a decent little shopping centre. All units full, a nice mix of shops. I hope WH Smiths gets replaced quick enough.
