Yep. I'm sure it will get horribly messy unless Boro win. So I guess for a clean run-up to the final, that's the preferable result for us. Though I think we've slightly more chance against Southampton.
Should just give Boro a two goal start tonight and get on with it .

Saints could end up forfeiting a place in the final.
Southampton could forfeit the first leg of the play-off, which would be awarded as a 3-0 win to Middlesbrough.

If Southmapton go through tonight and then get replaced in the final by Boro at short notice, surely we have grounds to sue as well? Boro will have been in training preparing for us, whilst we would have been expecting Southampton. That puts us at a major disadvantage. The whole thing is such a mess, EFL will be praying for a Boro win tonight

It’s extremely unlikely they’d be excluded but at worst it would happen immediately. The EFL’s rules would have to be absolutely watertight to enforce that and not be subject to big legal action and as we well know from experience their rules are very loose until someone starts probing them. No chance do they take that risk IMO.

I'm not really sure what you mean in this post but Southampton broke a specific rule
which was brought in after Leeds were caught spying on an opponent

The idea that some club employee just decided to do it himself with nobody
else knowing about it is just laughable

I hope they get a serious punishment for this not just a slap on the wrist small fine
The only way that Southampton can be disqualified from the playoffs element is if they gained an advantage.
No one can prove they did.
So the only punishment can only be a fine and if they stay in the EFL a points deduction.

It doesn’t matter if the spy was an employee or not, Southampton have admitted the charge.

If evidence is found that they used spying on other clubs outside of the rules, then there might be a case for disqualification for reaching the playoffs using illegal means. But not in the Boro case. Any possible advantage was negated by the discovery before the final day of training.

I am not defending Southampton, just stating what is obvious to me.

How would this even work in practice in the unlikely event they’re banned from the play-off final but beat Boro tonight? Boro play City at Wembley instead or City just go up without the final taking place?

If it happened I suspect the most likely outcome is Southampton forfeit first leg, and a 3-0 win is awarded to Middlesbrough.

Next season if they are in the play offs.

This Southampton debacle is a real bad deal for City.... there will be.a result tonight, but that might not be the result... as such any planning that City do analysts, strategy, twitchers could all be in vain...

I think the opposite.

If Boro win, then it's Boro definitely. Crack on.

If Southampton win then they're the ones preparing with possible sanctions over their heads. Gotta affect them.

Boro? Won't know where they stand. Everyone to go on holiday or hang about and train for something that's unlikely to happen?

Have to say, amidst all this spygate stuff, I do feel a bit for the players. I'm sure they didn't ask that somebody was sent out to spy for them and I'm sure they could happily do without all the crap they find themselves in.
Having said that M'boro just scored, 0-1 !
