How are Labour doing after their first 12 months

I don't tend to respond well to what I see as dictatorial measures, especially as we already have too many of them created just in my lifetime.

I am highly anti-establishment.

However for something that requires a small amount
of my time about once every 2 years (could be more
if referendum politics a la Suisse occurs) , I am ok.

I'd say you are not anti establishment if you are forcing people to vote, that's control.

I've always voted, I said I might not be arsed to vote next time, but I seriously don't see the point in making someone vote if they are going to post a blank piece of paper or spoil it.

IF you were to enforce checking ballots weren't spoiled or posted blank that not only tracks you but could be very dictorial.

So sorry fella but you are talking utter bollocks.

I think he'll have to be dragged out, no way is he quitting, he will pull every stunt in the book to stay in office. The media can't guess what he's going to say in the Commons tomorrow to change opinion.

So here is my take, he'll probably announce a plan to rejoin the EU tomorrow

A referendum to rejoin ??

If so, I voted remain but I will automatically
vote to leave (and I am far from alone on this) .

Nope.
The issue is how to communicate electorate
feeling to those who wish to govern us.

If 100% vote, and 40% are empty ballots,
that tells me we have a serious problem.

If those 40% have unticked ballots, but all
of them write 'you are all corrupt and in it
only for yourselves' on the sheet, that tells
me much more.

If those 40% stay at home, political parties
have a common riposte to explain them.

Good man, ignore my previous post. <laugh>

I have been trying to get info on WTO rules
regarding "subsidy" . Specifically if under
WTO trading when nations X and Y get tariff
fees TF from each other, can X use TF to
subsidise those native businesses trading with
Y (and vice versa) .

If anyone has some nous on the above, let me know.

Fair enough. I was postal vote, but I've changed it back to actually going to the voting station, it just didn't feel right sticking it in the post - plus it's a bit more sociable, far too many things since covid making us shut ourselves off from the world. I've even started going back to shops and binning off online stuff where possible.

Exactly, reason I like the Lib Dems is usually they're against this unnecessary bollocks, but I personally was very annoyed when Ed Davey endorsed the smoking controls.

Felt very anti-Liberal to me.

I don't think it's right to not vote, but people shouldn't be forced to do it under threat of punishment.

Postal should be for those who know they
cannot be there in person well before the day,

For the medical infirm (in hospital, housebound etc) ,
I would have electoral "notaries" who visit in pairs
and witness the voter casting/sealing their ballot.

Everything else IMHO is mainly civil.

Got a neighbour too infirm to go from door to station ??
If you have a car, offer to drive them to the station.

Old biddy, or parent corralling kids, in the queue ??
Let them go to the front.

You want mandatory voting but also to massively limit postal voting? So if I’m in the office on a Thursday election day I’ve either got to come straight home rather than go for a drink after work or break the law.

i said the same on the old "Animal farm" (brexit ) thread though that was at the tima as some people thought it should be re run due to false claims by the Leave campaign.

Though at some point enough time may have passed / circumstances changed for a fresh referendum

I think with hindsight the smoking legislation could have been tweeked slightly, but the problem was it was a cast iron measure to cut out smoking altogether.

I would have just banned smoking in establishments that served hot food. Because the scenario you've got now is old style back street boozers (what's left of them) the punters are just smoking in the street. Also the ones that do smoke outside in the gardens are rammed, while any no smoking area is virtually empty.

Might have exaggerated that a bit too much. <whistle>

The measures apart from health were made to appease those that will never support a back street boozer, so you've drove the smokers out and those that don't like smoking are rarely seen in that type of establishment.

I'm not sure, maybe Bwood might know, but I thought Spain did it based on size of the establishment. Anyhow they are never going to change it and the intention is to drive out smoking altogether hence now being based on the year you were born.

The next thing to be attacked will be alcohol, it's sort of on that path already, but it will not happen in my lifetime, but restrictions will become tougher and tougher, brewers are already lowering the strength of beers to keep the price down (tax) and of course the no alcohol market has exploded.

Although I've seen punters engaged in strength of beers and refusing to buy the lower priced stuff and I can't say I blame them.

Think if I was a decade or two younger I would have considered getting into the micro pub market but I've not got any experience at working in bars. I've seen good ones, I've seen not so good ones and I've seen some fail because the owners heart was never really in it to graft - and in tough times you can't afford staff.

If I won the lottery I'd open one up just as a hobby but employ staff to run it.

Can you not do both ??

You ever tried to use the Thameslink on a weekday? Those ****s break down more often than Darren Anderton.

But the point really is if you’re going to have mandatory voting you have to make voting as accessible as possible. Maybe multiple days rather than all on one. It’s kind of silly we vote on a little slip of paper in a church in 2026 when it could be done on your arse watching Corrie though it would probably get hacked by Russia and our government’s £60k head of IT wouldn’t stand a chance.

None of which was offered to the electorate at
any time between the 1970s and 2016.

Whether voters are deceived is moot.
As a citizen of the UK I abide by the will
of the majority (of a 75% turnout) ,
whether it was a result I want or not.
