Reading the Boro forum and they all seem to think there will be a fine and a “sporting punishment”. Which I’m interpreting as a points deduction. Can’t be this season as even if it’s a -2 or something then it would’ve meant we played the first leg at St Mary’s, so next season or maybe when we come back to the Champ in 2027. Or possibly a transfer ban for the summer.

They also think they will sue if we get promoted for loss of income. Could all be rumbling on for a while.
I think this is a sensible post.
The issue if with the breaching of EFL rules and not whether it can be demonstrated that Saints have benefitted from spying. Boro will have a case regardless of whether they beat us or not. I do think that there is a broader issue insofar as whether we have sied on other clubs. If this is a widespread practice, I can see other cubs keep quiet but I expect that this will not be the case. The EFL will throw the book at Saints and I think there will be clubs like Wrexham who will be watching on with interest.

I cannot see that a points deduction this season will work. I also think it will be avoided if we get promotion and the potentional to take the hit several seasons later when we are relegated again is not practical. I think the EFL will annul the tie and hive Boro a pass to the final.

The charge is breaking the Good Faith Requirement to another team. The rules state that charges can vary from Fines, point deduction and transfer embargoes.

So cancelling the game on Tuesday would be very very unlikely as would a point deduction this season as the first leg of the play off has now been completed.

People go on about Gibson at Boro suing the club or EFL, but don’t forget we have an extremely wealthy owner who I’m sure won’t just sit back and bend over for Gibson?

Think we’ll get a massive fine, with a possible suspended points deduction, but the EFL need to make a ruling quickly. For Gibson to,take it further should we win on Tuesday would be tough just as it was when clubs were trying to push through Leicesters points deduction a couple of years ago etc. Now there’s a case of serious cheating for 46 games plus.
But the EFL when they changed the regulation so you know what the punishment might be. If you speed you will get 3 points or 6 depending on the degree you were speeding. If you get 12 pts you will get a ban.
They should outline before the offence is committed. It just seems a bit bonkers.

Just can’t see it giving Boro a bye. It would open up all sorts of litigation. I think you are reading too much fans views on what should happen rather than what the EFL will realistically do

But how else can you punish a team so latevin the season and when they might othwerwise be in The Prem ?

I am honestly struggling to see another option.

I think the game will go ahead on Tuesday but other clubs in EFL will expect annulment on Wednesday. There will be other clubs wanting punishment other than Boro. In my opinion , annulment will be the cleanest punishment.i will be surprised if we are promoted after this stupidity. If we lose in Tuesday , i still aee a fine and points deductions but i think unlikely to be more than 6 points.

Definitely Boro will not be getting a bye, I don’t believe there is a punishment strategy set out?
So if found guilty, will they make it up?

Never going to happen in a billion years.

Apart from anything else if we then appealed and it was ruled to be too harsh we could go after the EFL for millions.

It will be easy to prove how far up the "spy" is in the Saints coaching set up and it won't be easy to prove who gave him the authority to do it.
As for other clubs, they will just have to suck it up because there is no way that they can prove anything without any evidence.

Sorry if already posted.

The Guardian article is suggesting that other clubs may also have been victim to Southampton spying and suggests they have already been contacted by few of them. It suggests that saints were readily able to adopt to opposition tactics. I heard something on the radio after the match which implied that the worst case scenario would be if other EFL clubs sought to expel Southampton, This was laughed off as being unlikely.

I am not convinced this will stop with 'Boro.

If other clubs had any proof they would already have made a complaint by now.

But we don't get teams having massive fines, or points deductions in a game if a player "cheats" to win a penalty? If its a relegation deciding game, and someone punches the ball into the net, the other team still gets relegated (and potentially loses massive amounts of revenue). There's no replay, or switching of roles or clubs being sued. It doesn't justify "cheating" by any team, I wish it wasn't in the modern game at all, but no one makes much noise when other forms of cheating happen.
