Our legendary former captain and longest-serving player Steve Perryman turns 60 today.

Born in Ealing on December 21, 1951, Steve joined us as an apprentice in 1967, turned professional in January, 1969 and made his league debut against Sunderland in the September of that year, aged 17.

He went on to make 855* competitive appearances for us in all competitions between 1969-1986.

An all-action midfielder in his early days, he was part of the teams that won the League Cup in 1971 and 1973 and UEFA Cup in 1972.

Taking over as captain in 1975, Steve went on to lift the FA Cup in 1981 and 1982 and played in the first leg of our 1984 UEFA Cup triumph, sitting out the second leg through suspension.

He was also named Football Writers Player of the Year in 1982, the year he won his only full England cap, and was awarded the MBE in 1986.

All the best on this special day, Steve!

    *Figure includes one abandoned match...

  3. Steve P is the subject of a pub quiz question that Spurs fans should find very easy to remember the answer to.

Q: Which football player captained the team in what proved to be his one and only cap?
    A: Steve Perryman.

How come he only got 1 cap?

I'm not older enough to remember him in his heyday but my mum said he was a cracking player and one of the best defenders we've ever had.

He was probably not big enough to be a centre half or quite good enough to be a midfielder for England. Fantastic player for Spurs though.

Not for spurs he hasn't. Giggs' record is 623 and counting which is the record in the top flight. Stevie P has 655 leagiue appearances, but includes a season in Div 2 :steam:

I have used the unimpeachable source of wiki. 623 is league appearances. Your own link has Steve on 613 Top Flight appearances (and that is the record Giggs passed in August), which tallies with mine when you factor in 1 season in Div 2.

Isn't he their DoF or something?

I got a signed frame picture of him lifting the FA Cup in 1982 on my bedroom wall from a charity dinner he did in 2005. Also got another Spurs legend to sign it as well - a certain Ricky Villa.

Happy Birthday Stevie <ok> - I remember being at the Lane for your début all those years ago :)

  16. I've got an old Holsten shirt signed by a few players, including Gary Mabbut, but I keep it hidden out of sight.

Why? (I hear you all cry!)

Well, because it's also got a certain Sol Campbell's signature on it, too. I don't have the heart to burn anything with the great Mabb's signature on it, and yet I cannot bring myself to acknowledge anything with Judas' signature on it. It's a dilemma I have resolved, down the years, by simply keeping the shirt tucked away at the bottom of a draw, in the darkest corner of the bedroom.
