… no one but the President’s men could’ve got to him.

It’s not even clear if he actually died as far as I know.

My guess would be that he’s living on an island keeping his mouth shut.

My thoughts exactly. He knew too much and I am sure he would have some damning evidence against Trump and his pals hidden away somewhere to be released in the event of his death. An insurance policy if you like. Maxwell is in an "open" prison and leaves it periodically allegedly.
