I'm afraid missing Slater is huge. Sergei's preference to only play 2 midfield players (I don't regard Gelhardt as a midfield player) has placed huge pressure on Regan, especially as all the alternatives (Amir, Crooks, Lunny) lack pace and the 2 we signed in January (Collyer and Dowell) are clearly just not cutting it or even ready to play. But I do think Lunny is the best defensive midfield player and he does have a good long raking pass, so I think he's going to be very important.

If Collyer can’t remain fit or have an impact for the last seven games of the season then it really is one of our most pointless loans. With Slater out, he should be making his case to start in all of these games. He’s been here nearly two months now and played just over 30 minutes.

The January transfer window is looking increasingly poor. Who's actually made any impact? Arguably just McNair.

Koumas has scored a couple of winning goals and Hirakawa was great until he got injured.

I'd say the only really poor signing was Dowell.

To be fair, yes Koumas has had some impact (although I'm still to be convinced about his all round play). Yu had one assist and looked busy but I think suffers from a bit of Omur-itus.

Dowell was clearly a poor signing - as was Collyer if we don't get him on the pitch but time will tell. The other thing to consider is we lost Destan and Akintola due to the signings we brought in. Both would have played frequently if they'd have been here I reckon.

McNair’s one of our best centre-backs and should partner Hughes in a back four when we have fit fullbacks.

Ajayi is very aggressive and has decent recovery pace but looks like an absolute giraffe with the ball at his feet. He actually makes some good progressive passes at times though. It’s like watching a toddler drive a car competently. Like, yeah, they’re driving okay and haven’t crashed yet but it’s still a kid…

Egan’s our worst centre-back, in my opinion. Slow as ****, not particularly tall or strong and pretty **** in possession. He has ‘experience’ and I hoped he had decent defensive and positional awareness but he doesn’t. Constantly comes flying out of position to win the ball which leaves a gaping hole in the defensive line and he cannot deal with balls over the top. I’ve lost count the amount of times he lets a long ball over the top bounce whilst jostling with a striker instead of winning first contact.

Really? For me Ajayi is Bambi on ice, I’d prefer Egan over him any day of the week!

I kept an eye on Dowel after he came on and I thought he worked hard and did ok

Dowell is one of those players that's maddeningly inconsistent, but has moments of brilliance in him. I just think that the second he realises he isn't top dog somewhere, he just doesn't bother. @Ric Glasgow alluded to him not being well liked at Rangers, I haven't seen anything to suggest he hasn't been a waste of wages so far when we have younger lads who would play their boots off.

Yeah, Ajayi looks like a giraffe but I struggle to name Egan’s strengths.
For me it’s like Apples & Oranges, they’re both a bit dodgy at defending, but decent in the opposition box, but for me, Egan doesn’t have that absolute disaster waiting to happen that Ajayi does.
Every time Ajayi gets on the ball or near the opposition player with the ball, it’s too dodgy as to weather he’ll concede a penalty or foul the player or just lose the player.

Ajayi wasn't bad before he went away on international duty, in fact him and Hughes were great, it was Egan that was the liability. Wonder what happened, whether he went away and hasn't adjusted to coming back or if the system changed and he isn't used to it. Whatever it is, he needs to unfuck himself sharpish.

Who said he'd be back for Oxford?
Baz in his latest article, said he was expected to be fine after the break. He also said Giles, Jacob and Gyabi are hoped to be back for Oxford.

And before someone in particular tells me he was just repeating the line from the club, maybe learn the lesson from crooks and Matazo and just keep the powder dry until we have some facts.

You mean this...

'Slater will undergo an MRI scan in the next 48 hours to determine any damage to the left ankle, but it's hoped there will be no lasting issue and he'll be fit to be involved in the busy Easter weekend, which comes in just under two weeks, once the international break is over'.

It doesn't say he's expected to be fine, it just says it's hoped that he'll be fine, which obviously was the case.
