The 2nd goal with seconds of the 1st half left killed us. Being so toothless a one goal deficit was going to be tough but 2.....impossible

More worrying is seeing yet more players going off injured - will we have enough (fit) players to fill the bench on Saturday?

For all the many mistakes individually, the lack of bollocks, the dreadful play with the ball when we had a fair chunk of it and the sheer ineptitude to concede the second goal when and how we did, this one is on the manager. You can’t look at our squad, look at theirs knowing how they’ll set up and play a flat 4-4-2 with Hayden as your midfielder. You certainly can’t know how tragically unfit the team is with its tendency to struggle midweek and pick the same team.

I’d give him the season because it’ll just be some other generic foreign nobody but you could count the really good performances this season on one hand and he’s got a much better squad than Cifuentes had. Even with the injuries there’s some perfectly capable players there and he’s very rarely getting close to the best out of hardly any of them.

Positives - Lose one nil or five nil it's only three points dropped ( I know the goal difference incurred, but I don't think it really matters given our league position. ) The killer was that at one nil we were still in the game. The second goal was the killer. You have to defend your goal as if your life depends upon it. We gave them a gift, the defence and goalie were static! Jimmy Dunne and Joe Walsh were culpable. That was the turning point, the saint's fans were frightful and nervous until that went in.

Walsh, Hayden, Saito and Kolli all very poor tonight, and most of the others not much better, but Kone remains my biggest concern. Very good against Coventry, but most of the time he must be so easy to mark. Hardly challenges for headers and so slow that he's never going to run past you. We desperately need Burrell back asap.

Thought he was our best player tonight tbh. It’s a low bar but Haaland would have looked **** relying on the service of Saito and Vale tonight and Kolli might as well have not been there. Saito is staggeringly bad almost every away game and is getting worse. It’s like watching a mascot.

Saito is like watching a player who has won a raffle to play for QPR!

Once we go a couple down getting tonked becomes a real possibility and we just went to pieces. Southampton probably coming good just in time, be surprised if they're not up there at the end but they didn't have to try particularly hard either.

We can't just look at tonight but over the season so far Walsh can be good but seems massively flaky, making the defence nervous. I still don't see what Hayden brings apart from the fact he's not injured. Mbengue, Dunne and Madsen are probably the most consistent - not sure anyone else has played enough yet

Hayden overall has been crap. Think people forget he’s 30. Meant to be in his prime. Would arguably have been the worst of all of them today if Saito didn’t exist which he possibly doesn’t.

both my teams lost 5 0 this week
both had **** goalies
although i would give the award to the phoenixs keeper
so bad he was taken off at half time

We lose the majority of our games in the centre of the park. Playing the two of Madsen and Hayden just leaves a gaping hole between midfield and attack. Madsen has been one, if not our most consistent performer to date. He plays deep as does Hayden or Varane. Varane is more mobile but doesn't pass the ball forwards, Hayden is very slow and just not that good. You could argue that it enables our full backs to get forwards but you could then argue that their crossing ability is crap. Old Tombola Stephan really does need to up his game. Granted we have injuries. Poku looks like another JCS, Dembele has been **** anyway, Smyth is well, just Smyth. Chair and Burrell are the only two who make a difference. Even when we had Field, that gave us 4 defensive midfielders, we need that player who buzzes about, links midfield to attack with runs rather than passes. Last night was one of the reasons I have given up on this season. It's just more of the same.

Having given up on watching after the 3rd goal I was clearly spared the rest of an embarrassing surrender. This was always going to be a difficult game bearing in mind our injury list but conceding so early put us under pressure. We actually competed well for around ten minutes without creating anything significant before Madsen got crocked and we gradually came under more pressure. Conceding right at the end of the half was the hammer blow and another poor goal early in the 2nd half set the tone for the rest of the game.

Tactically we were poor, not competing in the centre of midfield but playing so predictably up the wings with little success we offered nothing as we have in so many away games this season. I just can't fathom Stephan's logic in playing so negatively, our shots on target in away matches is appalling but the biggest problem I see is our midfield which we constantly find ourselves outplayed and out muscled. His substitutions are often too little too late. The only difference this season is we have been mid table through most of the campaign and should have enough to avoid our usual end of season sweat although any more performances like last night will bring the jitters back. Saturday will be a big test of our resolve to bounce back against another team who were among the promotion favourites but have, like Saints, found form after a poor start...

Agree with what others have said above...nothing to add...it was just poor. I am, however, quite proud of myself for seemingly being one of the few people who saw their fifth goal go in before turning off. Or is that something I shouldn't admit to.

Nothing quite like half-seeing it as you walk down the steps but being more interested in the six stewards piling into one young guy who allegedly broke a seat below you.

Onwards to Saturday. Sheff U have a tough game tonight and one less day to recover. Our brave young soldiers will be ready I’m sure.

Hopefully last night will have brought reality home to the "we can still make the play offs" faction

The players that we have available currently are mid table at best, and we were flattered on Saturday by an extremely average Hull

I'm increasingly keen to see the season end....

I did feel sorry for Edwards last night. To get smashed 5-0 on your return must've been pretty depressing, albeit I thought he was one of our better/less poor players

Dave, I was proud too for staying to watch until the ref blew the final whistle. We had fans leaving 20-30 minutes early (and I don’t blame them having to get home). Saw the players coming over as we were walking down the steps but I couldn’t bring myself to face them or clap them I’m afraid. Fair play to them for facing the fans I guess.
Was a **** walk around the stadium though to get back to the car amongst all the happy clappy soton fans.
