Match Preview;
After Saturday's wonderful display in the far north east of England, we next head to the very south coast of England. I can't help but be reminded of the last Anglo-Saxon King of England, Harold Godwinson, who having defeated Harold Hardrada, in the north of England, at The Battle of Stamford Bridge (always a good place to win a battle), led his army back down south, and partly due to travel fatigue, were then defeated on the fields of Hastings by William, Duke of Normandy...who became the first Norman King of England when he was crowned on Christmas Day 1066. Anyway, history lesson over, we can't let the same fate that met Harold Godwinson trip us up on Tuesday night. Hopefully the squad will have travelled back and had some rest after the journey, and the great performance again Hull.*
*as I was typing, and reminiscing on my history GCSE, it did occur to me the travel speed and comfort has drastically improved in one thousand years.
That win means we've lost two, drawn one and won two in our last five...a run that has kept us within reach of the playoffs, but only if we go on a consistent winning run, that enables us to climb from 13th and bridge the 4 point gap that currently separates us from 6th. Realistically, I don't think this is achievable this season, but we are building, slowly improving, and getting more things right...improvements shown by the result against Hull, who are still 5th even after last weekend. Our top scorer is stil Rumarn Burrell, with 10 goals, followed by Kone on 7...but Burrell is still on his way back from his hamstring injury, and his replacement, Obikwu, is also out for the next few weeks, so Kone needs to keep scoring, and ideally Smyth, Saito, Madsen and co continue banging the ball into the back of the net as often as possible too!
As for our opponents, Southampton, they've won three and drawn two in their last five league games, as well as beating Leicester to get to the 5th round of the FA Cup, whatever that is. Their top scorer is Adam Armstrong, on 11 goals, followed by Finn Azaz on 8, then three players, including former 'R' Ryan Manning, on 5 goals. They sit 11th, level with us on 47 points, so also with an outside chance of playoff spot if they have a very strong last quarter of the season. Their manager is Tonda Eckert, a 33 year old, who has worked his way up from managing youth teams in Germany, became assistant manager at Barnsley, then Genoa, before joining Will Still as under-21 manager at Southampton. When Still was sacked in November 2025, Eckert took over, and was given the job permanently after winning his first three games in charge, he was permanently given the job in December. After relegation last season, they'd have been hoping for an immediate return to the top flight, but after yo-yo-ing up and down over the last three seasons, surely they'll be hoping for some stability, and promotion when they are ready. That said...I thought that when we were relegated in 2015, and now in our 11th season in the second tier, we are still seeking stability, so maybe going up and down again and again isn't so bad.
Team news and manager comments to go up if/when on the official, and others can add what they know. Enjoy if you are making the trip, and as always...
...COME ON YOU SUPER HOOPSA!!!
