Last day of farm sitting today. Need a rest. Absolutely hanging.
Besides the routine stuff, lots of add hoc activity.
Keep getting messages from Paris with additional tasks.

Three calves were developing pneumonia so are on a course of injections. Could we jab the ones with the ear tag numbers provided. First job, find the 3 out of a shed full of 50. Second task, one by one, walk them into a corner and grab them. Third task, 2 jabs each. Mrs remote was good at spotting them, but the muscle was down to me. At 150-180kg they arent easy to handle. Took over half an hour, a lot of swearing and me on my @r$e in a $h!tty shed. No photos, not enough hands.

Next ad hoc, unload and store 5 one tonne palets of feed. I hate the telehandler. Visibility is shocking and I keep hitting things. Much prefer the tractor, but its 40 miles away.

Yesterday, theres a lorry load of straw coming. Needs unloading and stacking. It was only 28 tonnes of the stuff.

Anyway, a few more jobs to do before heading home.
Been on the yard 3 hours already, so time for breakfast.

Looking forward to next time already.
Fabulous Remote. Put your feet up now.

Been watching some of the winter olympics.
Heavy use of drones to get footage.
Chasing the skeleton riders down the track. Following the big air snowboarders. Speeding after the giant slalom skiers.
Impressive footage, but the whining of the drones is annoying as hell. It must offputting for the contestents.
Certainly on the skeleton, in a confined space, great flying of the drones.
Maybe that should be its own event.

We already have it here.

Masky drones on and on and on....

Down to Stafford again today. More stock fencing. Its not too bad as daughter cooks for us. We make a day of it. Work until dark then a meal and a catch up.
Fields are soaking. Not taken any of the heavy machines up to the top field and even the quad is tearing it up. A few bits where I was pushing the trailer as the quad had so little traction. Horses werent helping and we had retrieve the ewes from a neighbouring field, hence the fencing. A few of the ewes starting to bag up, so the first lambs will only be a couple weeks ofg.
Some decent rainbows when it rained.

That looks like hard work Remote. I do like seeing updates on the Facebook page. Mind you your daughter’s fella looks like a big lump of a lad so he should be able to cope okay. Either that or your daughter is tiny!
Hope the weather improves as you approach the lambing season. We’ve definitely had enough of this rain!

Ive often said that I enjoy spending time of the farm, but wouldnt want to have to do it for a living. Im going fishing in a bit having had a bit of a lie in. Theyll have been grafting for a couple hours already.

It's a bit of both. Shes about 5'2" and pushing 8st. All muscle.
Her fella is a big lad. 6'3" and well over 17st. Big shoulders on him. When he hits a fece post with a mallet, it stays hit. Nice bloke. Im 6'1" and 15st10. He dwarfs me.
I had a good work out yesterday. Half a dozen posts in I was blowing a bit though.

Yep, lambs not far off now. Couple of weeks.
Im sure there will be piccies.

A friend of a friend of theirs has asked them to go into a secondary school to talk about farming. Both of them are 1st generation farmers so theyve been asked to talk about how you get into farming if youre not born into it.
Also what it entails. I was talking with them about it yesterday and ticking off what they get up to as a small farmer. A multitude of skills needed. Vetinary nurse, farm hand, mechanic, fencer, shepherd, machine operator, milker, and the list goes on.
Never a dull day. Wet days, tiring days, long days, frustrating days. All of those, but never dull.

It must be a calling not a career. So much extremely hard work that few of us ever experienced but so many rewards as well. You all have my total admiration.

I have a total respect for farmers. More so since my dabblings.
Physically demamding and at times mentally draining. The number of things outside of your control that can go wrong is scarey. The weather can be a nightmare especially for crops.

A question....probably best here than Facebook. You mentioned pneumonia jabs a couple of weeks ago. And your daughter was doing smoke rests recently.
Who pays for those.....assuming they are B&B animals? If an animal dies, who takes the cost? Or do they buy in, develop and then sell on?

There are different models that businesses operate.
Sometimes its a higher price but you take on more risk.
Other times its a lower price and less risk.
Cant say I undetstand the fine detail of the contacts.

Our fishing club membership runs from 1st March to end Feb. Limited to 70 members, but theres always a turnover. For the last few weeks Ive been processing applicants and offering membership for the vacancies.
Before the start of the season I arrange 'orientation' sessions so new members get to meet, get shown access to the fishery, lodge and boats, a few dos and donts and a walk around the lake. Blue skies and a light breeze, so a nice morning for it.

Bright sunshine up here at the minute and 12c, about bleedin' time too. :emoticon-0138-think

After a bad start to the day, ditto down here in Porthcawl - people are flocking out to worship that big yellow thing in the sky.

Won't be long now before the lawn mowers come out.........<whistle>
