They've all won a bloody domestic trophy since we last flipping well did!!!!

Bit grim isn't it when you see some of the names on that list. Have we become the "always the bridesmaid" team of English football?

I'm now officially bloody depressed! We all get excited and complimentary about the great results we have had this season and the fantastic players we have now got and have had , but for all that i would swap the lot just to have seen the club lift a flipping trophy! (I was born in 1958).

In all honesty though, would you swap the last 20 years with many of those clubs for the sake of a trophy?

In all honesty, NO!

There is more to football than winning trophies which is a good job for us Toon fans. I'm 26 now and I've been Newcastle mad since I was 6-7 years old. Wouldn't swap it for the world. Watching the Toon play in the Champions League and even the UEFA cup was special and I miss it dearly. What have Birmingham done in that time?

Congrats to Birmingham mind, not trying to take anything away from them but watching your team compete in Europe is better than winning the League cup imo. Let's hope those days return soon!

Would you feel the same if i told you that in 26 years time we still wouldn't have won a trophy? And by the way if you win a trophy you then go on to play in Europe!

Good point! What I was trying to point out was that many teams win something as a result of good luck and/or a good run then return to obscurity! Look at the following-

3 Leicester (3LC)
3 Wolves (2LC, 1FA)
2 Birmingham (2LC)
2 Norwich (2LC)
2 WBA (1LC, 1FA)
2 Leeds (1LC, 1FA)

Would you really swap your history with any of theirs?

No way!

Let's face it, we have one of the best supported teams in the country and we're not glory hunting team hoppers that go from club to club because of what they win, we're NUFC through and through.

I've got a ST and see all the home games, but I also go to all the away games and see the same faces week after week. Each and every one of the guys are just passionate football fans who'd love to see the team win some kind of trophy but will follow NUFC no matter what. It's just the way we are, it's in the blood.

If we do win a trophy though, the celebrations will be awe inspiring. Unfortunatley, fate and the team tends to go against us

If we were to win a trophy in my life time with a higher prestige than the Intertoto then I'm in for a whole world of pain...

The last 25+ years of watching and supporting NUFC have the been the greatest, most exciting, most exhilarating as well as the most frustrating and depressing ever.

If ever a club was able to claim the title of the greatest team to steal defeat from the jaws of victory - we'd have to be in with a shout (though we'd most likely lose the final).

I've supported NUFC for nearly forty years, born 1968 and have no memories of not supporting them as I was converted as an infant. In all that time we've won the Intertoto and a couple of Championship/Div 1 titles and thats it. But more frustrating than that is that I am surrounded by plastic Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal fans who genuinely start feeling sorry for themselves if they don't win at least one trophy every year and actually start touting for sympathy.

I always tell them the same thing. They know nothing about the sense of achievement and exhilaration that should be felt at winning a trophy. They chose to support a successful team so that winning was easy and they don't appreciate the victories for the special event that they are. And because of that the sense of elation I will feel when NUFC eventually wins something it is going to make any joy they have ever felt feel like pain in comparison. NUFC til I die and keep the faith, the day of joy will come!!

I can't actually imagine winning something, I wouldn't know what to do with myself...It'd wouldn't feel right? Still, I'd spend a good few nights 'adjusting', once I crawl out of my pit, blinking into the sunshine on the first hangover-less morning I'm sure I'll have managed to get my head around it!

Totally agree Aldridge. All those teams you have listed there, with the possible exception of Blackburn & Bolton, and Sunderland (and possibly Birmingham though they are struggling this season so jury's out), are now either in obscurity or struggling in lower leagues. And Sunderland have been up and down the top two tiers until the last year or two. Aside from last year's blip we have probably been one of the most consistantly sucessful teams (not counting the 'big four/five') in the entire league in terms of league standings season in, season out. Look at the number of teams in this list that were premier league teams a few years back and have now plumetted down the tables - practically every single team there!

I was there when we won our last trophy...:)

There again I am an old fart.

I've been watching Newcastle since 1959 and believe me I've witnessed some pap over the years, both on and off the field.
However I wouldn't swap places with any of the teams that have won trophies and titles since then for one simple reason....they are not NEWCASTLE UNITED my team.

Yes, and what have most of those teams done? Got relegated, sometimes more than once.

We may not have won anything recently, but that doesn't mean the teams that have, have been more successful. I'd rather be an established PL team at the top end of the table, then win a cup and perish.

....What have Birmingham done in that time?

This is exactally what I was arguing about with a Boro' fan when we beat them 2-0 at home last season, he kept banging on about the cup no one wants and that we'd won nowt. I said I wouldn't swap that ****ty cup for the 20 seasons I've had as a Newcastle fan!!
