As always the problem in Jan is who is available/cost of a player midway through the season. The best bet is if there is a player who is out of contract end of season and the selling club are happy to take some sort of fee rather than lose them for nothing.

Loan for a keeper is much more logical given the Ramsdale situation and there are probably keepers out there who fancy being first choice for 6 months.

Striker is much harder and I’m fine with not getting one in Jan if it turns out like that. We’ve shown in the last 8 games we can score goals without an additional striker, so whilst it would be nice to get the “plan B” big man in I don’t think it is an absolute must (I also don’t think keeper is either in Jan, but is a bigger need). We also do have two strikers who fit the big man criteria even if one is always injured and the other has looked poor.

The other thing to factor in is we have no squad space, so for any signing over the age of 21 someone will have to leave/not be registered

I think we will be very quiet in Jan and wouldn’t surprise me to see no new signings

I think a lot will depend on possibly shifting Aribo/Edozie etc out.

Aribo is out of contract at the end of the season, I wonder if we’d just let him go for nothing to save some money on wages. Imagine he is one of our higher earners.

Won’t be a given he’d leave anyway as he won’t earn more anywhere else, in terms of a weekly wage anyway, and he’d have offers in the summer anyway. Makes sense from his perspective to just see the contract out and then sign a smaller one elsewhere in the summer

Edozie should be fairly doable on loan id imagine, was just weird in the summer that he allegedly had a few options then nothing happened.

If we bring a keeper in then an easy way to open the squad spot is to send Long back to Norwich. Or possibly just let McCarthy go on a free if there are any takers. Same situation as Aribo though where he isn’t getting a better weekly wage anywhere, it’s just if he wants the security of a 2/3 year deal rather than 6 months here.

Having just looked him up I also find it crazy how long McCarthy has been here. He has been team mates with Hojbjerg and Van Dijk in his time at Saints. If he sees out his contract he will have been here for 10 years

He's been ok as a back up that doesn't cause any fuss, problem has been if he's been starting for any length of time.

Nothing against him at all - he's done what he's been asked to, when he's been asked to, to the best of his ability through several seasons of turmoil - but I think it's coming to a natural close on his time with us.

He can also say he played for England which is still an achievement to be proud of

Is he due a testimonial? He's conducted himself well during trying times. He arrived August 1 2016, if he sees his contract out he'll have done ten years. I wouldn't begrudge him that given the behaviour of some of his teammates over the years.

No idea to be fair. In the modern game how many players get to 10 years with the same club and how many of them aren't already set up for life financially and need the leg up that the testimonial income would give them?

They’re more charity events now

Think we’ll see some loans incoming in January

Yes wasn’t there a situation for Le Tiss’s testimonial where someone else had one at a similar time and gave the money to charity and Le Tiss got shade for not doing that. But the other player had played at the very top. I think won leagues for Arsenal maybe? I can’t really remember

Edit : I think it was Tony Adams

Sounds likely - don't recall to be honest but Le Tiss probably never got a really big contract so financially the testimonial was probably needed - now though a football player at any reasonably high level should be set for life and then its not about setting them up for retiring from the game by recognition that in the modern game a 10 year stint is a rarity.

I'd be open for a loan of a good keeper and reassess in the summer

My gut says two new faces next month, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's either one or three.

I say "new" but one of them might yet be Bree, if Tonda decides he wants him back in the squad when his loan ends in two weeks.

Matsuki clearly isn't figuring, so he'd be high on my list to leave in January (most likely on loan). Aribo I'd be fine with just giving away. Nothing against Jelert, who seems a decent RB, but I'm not sure what he's like at RWB and he hasn't featured much (not all his fault), so terminating his loan (if possible) could be an easy way to create another squad space. If anyone wants to buy Fraser, I'd happily sell. And if we do manage to loan in a no.1 keeper, them hopefully we can terminate Long's loan in order to accommodate that.

Not really been following our loanees, I know Bree is doing well. What about ABK, Smallbone and Taylor? All of them are out of contract in the summer as well I think so we could get a small fee for each of them if their loans are going well and the loan club want to just get the deal done rather than risking other interest when their contracts expire

ABK has a club option to extend by a year I believe.
