I'm not sure that many have said wait and see with Tonda? I know many have said wait and see which managers may become available in the next few weeks. I don't think many at all want Tonda full time.
This. But if in the meantime we win a few games that takes the pressure off a panic manager and we may be able to get who we want.
You could look at it in the opposite way. Seeing if Tonda does well and giving him the job until the end of the season could well be a long term plan. Our choice of managers will likely be much better in the summer. So Tonda seeing us through until then would avoid us having to rush and settle for someone we dont really want.
Just watched the presser. Sounds like he has the job if the next 3 games are positive. He avoided directly answering questions about his future. Bored with the talk about club philosophy and fans getting behind the team. Same old flannel over and over. Zero talk about football and how we can improve on the pitch. He might be a genius, who knows? I certainly can't see him kicking them up the backside. Looks way too placid.
He is clearly who the players 'want'. So they are getting a fairly easy time, doing tactics that they 'like' and 'know', not too much physical fitness stuff and passing back and forth practice, and probably getting Mondays off and some hugs. So he will get the job.
They definitely have. Some may have the thinking of the second part of what you're saying but I have definitely seen comments on here from people saying that as long as he keeps winning why can't he just keep managing.
If this board's polls are representative of the Saints fanbase, then Tonda would be a less popular appointment than O'Neil. He'd be under huge pressure as soon as we don't win a game .
If SR has not found anyone before December I think it is highly likely that Tonda will be given the January window and about three weeks after it closes. Whether that is still as an interim or as the named manger I am not sure, but financially it makes sense to keep him on his current contract as long as possible. When we got rid of Russell I wanted Mark Robins - I think we missed a chance there. I guess if Carrack wanted the job he would have accepted already.
There are undoubtedly people in our fan base who would still find fault in Tonda if he won the next 39 games and delivered automatic promotion and the FA Cup.
There are also some ( maybe the same ones) who don’t believe SR could appoint the right man if he was standing in front of them and slapping them with a kipper So it doesn’t really matter to them if they stick with Tonda or not I’d LIKE to believe that SR keep learning from their mistakes and may eventually appoint a good manager. Who knows? Either way, Tonda’s get the job till someone ‘better’* shows up, and every time he wins he possibly raises the bar for a new guy * In SRs opinion
Or? Good experience for Tonda and Lallana and new man needs to bring in his own assistant and/or team
It was permanent the day they announced him, they're just waiting for the opportune moment to announce it. Hope for some good results to soften the announcement in the meantime..
I cannot get my head around why anyone would see a negative in us winning matches? If we're winning week in, week out, I couldn't really care whether it's Tonda or Klopp who is the dugout. If it gets to mid-February and we've won, say, 17 out of 20 matches overseen by Tonda as caretaker, then he'll deserve to keep the job. I don't for one moment think we will win that many btw - I'm not even sure that we'll win tomorrow - but who knows. I totally understand why people are concerned that we might rush into appointment far too soon; appointing him after five or six matches would be crazy in my book. But whilst he remains as caretaker, winning is, er, kind of a good thing.
I'd prefer a permanent manager in before Christmas so he can assess things before the January window and yeah, if Tonda was given the job now I'd be concerned. Two decent but unspectacular wins over poor sides just isn't that impressive. If we start winning (and ideally playing well) against the likes of Charlton, Leicester and Millwall then maybe that changes things.
Here's my take - I really want Tonda to do well and go on an endless winning run but unfortunately I can't see a man who's senior footballing career was the equivalent of 7 appearances for Sholing reserves and who's total management experience has been at either assistant or youth level saving the day. If he does lead us into the playoffs and starts getting Saints playing terrific football I'm phoning the Vatican because it would be nothing short of a miracle! Sorry I'm just a cynic and I don't believe in fairy-tells
