It came up at the talk in. I can't remember who initially invented it for the league one playoff, but Bruce wanted to revive it for the end of last season and this years playoffs. Reactions were mixed due to it being for league one and now we were potentially up for a premier league place. After further discussions, they went with it and the rest is history!

REGIS LE BRIS demands wholehearted intensity from whoever is in Sunderland’s starting line-up. So, with such high physical requirements, the Black Cats boss accepts he also needs game-changing substitutes capable of turning a game in its latter stages...
Le Bris needs his ‘starters’ to lay the foundations for a positive result – but he now knows he can rely on his ‘finishers’ to deliver a dramatic denouement.
“Our four subs were really important because we are in this league, and probably our game model is really demanding for our forwards. They don't just have to stay wide waiting for the next pass, you have to work hard with the squad otherwise we can't defend against a strong squad like Arsenal.
“So, they worked well for 60 minutes, then four players came on the pitch [Brobbey, Talbi, Simon Adingra and Eliezer Mayenda] and those finishers helped to maintain the energy, the quality of the organisation and they have different profiles.”
Brobbey stole the headlines as he claimed his first goal since joining Sunderland from Ajax on deadline day.
The Dutch striker showed impressive strength to muscle ahead of Gabriel as well as commendable composure as he swivelled to hook home a brilliant finish.
Le Bris admitted Brobbey was short of match sharpness when he moved to Wearside from the Netherlands, but while he is yet to select the 23-year-old in one of his starting line-ups, he has been impressed by the way in which the striker has improved during his time at Sunderland.
“We feel that he has improved a lot,” said the Sunderland boss. “He needed time to change from another club to a new club, a new league, new team-mates, so he worked hard and I think he deserves this reward.
“When you start against Wilson [Isidor], for example, you know that it will be a threat in behind, even if he now has the ability to hold the ball. With Brian, you have another profile, totally different, and he is a good scorer as well.”
Idiotic self serving comment from Walcott, wouldn't expect any more from him mate, doesn't make any reference to how Gabriel, Saliba and Calafiori were constantly shirt pulling and trying to drag Ballard, Isidor and Brobbey about in their own penalty area.

Sunderland - and I say this as a massive compliment - are a horrible side to play against. They are almost a throwback to a bygone era but they are so effective. Huge point for them against Arsenal and they roughed up and rattled the league leaders throughout [HASHTAG]#safc[/HASHTAG]

What narks me more about comments like this is they don't mention the other bits we do, the ground we cover, the triangles we make to get numbers up the field, the changes in our shape in and out of possession, the adjustments that Le Bris makes during games, the game changing substitutions and the impact a 21 year old Sadiki has had on the Premiere League.
As an aside, I listened to a post match interview with Le Bris last night and I am paraphrasing but he said we didn’t just play five at the back, we played five at the back in a deep block, three in a mid block and two in a high block. I must admit I haven’t noticed that but I will be watching for it when I watch the full 90.
Agree mate, it’s very lazy ‘journalism’ and just reinforcing the stereotype. It was laughable how the NE football correspondent described us as embracing the ugly side of the game as if Newcastle play pretty football.

This is a little bit for my benefit so bare with me. I haven't been that impressed with Adingra when he's played this season but thought he was brilliant when he came on last night. He worked his absolute bollocks off closing Arsenal down. His best game for us IMO
