REGIS Le Bris has called for patience with Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey, saying the summer recruit needs time to adjust to the Premier League after his move from Ajax....

"It's still a process to step up to this league," said Sunderland's head coach. "He's still really young, he comes from a different club with a different style of play, probably with Ajax they were always dominant [on the ball] with a high block and so this is a totally different way of playing, and a totally different challenge.

"He needs time and support. This challenge at Man Utd [when he came off the bench for the last half and hour] will have been useful for him. Obviously we would have liked more from him and all of the players because the performance wasn't the best version of Sunderland, but the process is ongoing."

Brobbey got some crucial match minutes under his belt and scored in a behind closed doors friendly against Scottish Premiership side Livingston at the Academy of Light on Wednesday. Sunderland won the game 2-0. The Dutchman started up-front alongside Ahmed Abdullahi and was one of a number of senior players who will have benefited from the run-out.

Dan Neil and Anthony Patterson, both regulars last season who lost their place in the Sunderland starting XI during the summer, featured in the friendly, as did Lutsharel Geetruida, the summer recruit who is still waiting to make his first Premier League start. Enzo Le Fee also featured despite playing a prominent role in the early weeks of the campaign.

Luke O'Nien got some crucial match minutes having recovered from the shoulder injury that he suffered in May's play-off final win over Sheffield United. The club captain returned to the bench for the win at Nottingham Forest and was an unused substitute at the City Ground and Old Trafford.

Joe Anderson and Jay Matete were involved but the likes of Ian Poveda and Timothee Pembele weren't. All four of those players will be allowed to leave in January if new clubs can be found.

Sunderland will also look at a potential loan switch for Abdullahi. The striker still hasn't played a competitive game for the Black Cats since joining last summer, but Le Bris recently insisted the 21-year-old still has a future at the Stadium of Light.

Patience is something in short supply from some of our supporters tbh.

No matter how many times they're proved wrong they're still ready to write off players after a couple of games ...

... it's sometimes like a race to be the first to declare.

Yeah, it's weird as we've seen plenty of other players start slow and become very good.

I'm hoping the same can be true for Ahmed

Striker Ahmed Abdullahi also started the friendly game as he looks to build towards full match fitness following an injury-hit first campaign on Wearside. A loan deal to Ligue 1 side Angers fell through in the latter stages of the transfer window, but Régis Le Bris said recently that he hopes an extended block of training could benefit the 21-year-old.
