Long time ago but from memory I think they took the social club off us in the very early 80's. It was situated under the North Stand and accessible from some metal stairs. Although you get get into it direct from the seating area. I believe it had the longest bar in the city at the time. One memory I had was a Saturday afternoon v Swansea. The game was called off very late about 2.30 after a torrential downpour. One coach of Swansea fans had just arrived on the car park and they asked quite politely if they could use the club, get a drink, maybe a sandwich and use the toilet etc before setting off back to Wales. The chairman, Syd Stamp, was on the door and asked if they were members? Of course they weren't so he wouldn't let them in.
The very first club shop was under the South Stand which opened when the stand opened. It was quite novel at the time because we hadn't had a club shop before. There was a blonde haired lady who worked in there for many years. Remember it being packed on a matchday and it sold all sorts of useless black and amber nick nacks, plus pen knives and previous games home programmes. My favourite was the round car stickers which were about the only thing I could afford at 6p each. I didn't have a car obviously, being still at school, but I stuck the car stickers all over the place. There was another club shop built into the supermarket on the main car park in the 90's and that eventually doubled up as a ticket office. We also had a club shop in Paragon Square near Duncans gunshop in a property owned by Richard Cheetham, ex City director and one time chairman. That was tiny and manned by a couple of elderly ladies. I once bought a club jersey from there with the club crest on it and remember them saying 'that's our biggest sale of the week'.
