Was debating this with my Son the other day about best matches/moments at the SOL. Whilst we agreed that Ballard's header was the best moment, we couldn't decide between the Chelsea and Everton games for best match. Both were amazing, but I think the emotional rollercoaster of the Chelsea match just shades it for me.
0-1 & 1-2. Came back to win 3-2 Costa scored for them early on. Khazri shinned it from 20 yards then Matic went up the other and scored. We were trailing 1-2 at HT 2nd half, Borini from a PVA cross, the Defoe from a Yedlin cross got us to 3-2 Seem to remember them having a free kick on the edge of the box in the dying minutes that took about 5 years from my life
Think you mean this one, but we were 2-1 down at one point rather than 2-0. On This Day: 17th March 2001 – Carteron makes debut as the lads smash four past Chelsea https://rokerreport.sbnation.com/20...kes-debut-as-the-lads-smash-four-past-chelsea
This for me is e This for me is easily the best atmosphere I’ve experienced- remember seeing blokes sitting on the floor in the toilets with heads in hands too nervous to watch! The misty fog adding to the atmosphere- Perez double save, it was electric. The Coventry match was special and the Ballard goal was the ultimate “moment” but for overall atmosphere the Sheff utd play off is the one for me
Think where the Sheff United one wins it’s absolutely relentless noise. Coventry was enhanced as the game grew due to the increase in tension and the fact we were on the back foot. Despite the wonder of the ending Coventry wasn’t a wall of noise all night there were periods when we were all ****ting ourselves. Sheffield game was just, as I’ve said, relentless. We never thought we might lose that one in truth, despite going into it behind and having some hairy moments. Rather than saying one was better than the other, I’d suggest they were both very different and both electric.
Genuinely thought we were done. Felt like a matter of time until Coventry scored the winner or won on penalties. What happened with Ballard was just incredible.
Aye there were extended periods when I thought ‘we struggling here’. They didn’t really look like scoring as such but we weren’t holding the ball. Last 10 mins and extra time we found our feet and that’s when the stadium took off. The scenes at the end are unmatched at the SOL for sure, but I agree Sheffield game tops it overall. I think a few do overall as I listed earlier. As I said, the bedlam at the end can only be matched, never beaten. That was max. We couldn’t have given more than that it was the most beautiful carnage.
