Honestly, I think now a lot of officials wait for VAR to keep them right, even if VAR is wrong. Take yesterday and the offside for Brentfords' goal. Me and everyone around me in the East Stand could see he was a mile off, but no flag. Ok if it was as marginal, but it was clear he was offside, there was no reason not to flag and aren't they supposed to have semi automated offside this season? Yet he was able to run virtually the full half and put the ball in the net before 2-3 minute stoppage for a VAR check to rule it out. Christ, the player even looked back after putting it in the net to check for a flag as he ran off to celebrate. To me either the linesman wasn't watching so didn't flag or wasn't sure and let VAR make the decision for him. Add onto that, why was the delay so long when a simple check straight away should have sorted it in less than 15 seconds? The cynic in me says it's because the linesman screwed up, so the VAR check took time to make it look like it wasn't as clear cut as it was to save face for the linesman.
