Lack of trade and foresight. When I was a market trader there were about a dozen butchers in the indoor market. In their wisdom Hull City Council decided to split the food from the non food traders and put a stop to the meat auctions at the end of a trading day. Now there is one fruit and veg stall and no butchers and you'd struggle to describe it as a market at all.
One chain has taken vegetarian menus off their options due to lack of demand so I don’t think there is a great rise in veganism otherwise everywhere would have loads of vegan restaurants.
Don't they do it in normal restaurants?(not that I'm saying veganism is abnormal). Like erm, "2 Tomahawk steaks and chips love,hold the Tomahawk on the wife's plate,she'll take an extra portion of mung bean and crunchy ramen salad"
And do we even have a wet fish shop anywhere in hull now? I know we’re not a fishing port anymore but Jesus it’s poor. Go to Donny and they have wet fish in their market, ones even a good restaurant !! I used to always get some fish from Smokey Joe’s in market Mainly cos I knew the family and they used to give me it!!
Knew Smokey Joe and the Maddens well. The council drove them out in the end and as you say there are no fishmongers in there now and maybe only a couple left in the city? Can you imagine how wealthy Hull would be if we were still the biggest fishing port in the UK with fish and chips the price it is today? We fished from here when it was sold for pennies and over 6,000 men sailed from this port and never returned catching it.
Ye I used to play for Joe’s Sunday team as a lad, he used to pick lads up from all over Hull. He put so much effort into looking after us all Glenn’s a smashing kid Not seen him now for A long time hope he’s well?
He's driving a lorry these days. Good footballer in his day. I was at a City sportsmen's dinner with Joe and Glenn back in the day, Ron Atkinson was the guest speaker and it was at a time when Joe was losing it a bit with dementia. Midway through Big Ron's talk Joe stood up and started asking Atkinson questions about the time they played together. We think Joe thought he played for Fish Trades but much to Atkinsons credit he played along with Joe and it was quite a funny if not touching little five minutes or so. At the end of the night Ron Atkinson came and sat at our table and asked 'is the old fella ok? I'm sure he chucked twenty quid or so in the kitty to buy us a round of drinks too. Two top blokes.
Simpsons down Hessle rd is the only one i know, i pop every 3 months and stock up, the one down Newland ave was good one but think that's being shut about 10 years now ?
Ah brought a tear to my eye that. He was a great bloke Joe. He bought an old van and had it converted just so he could run 20 lads all over Hull. He’d pick us all up for training and that was kids from longhill all across the city to hessle rd where he picked Ian Davies up who went on to play for Hull City. I always remember coming home age 11 expecting a smack cos it was about 10 at night and dark and Joe was sat in the kitchen with my old man. He’d turned up at 6 wanting to sign me for his team and spent all night talking football with my old man!! Played for him for the next 6 years
One chain might have done, but that’s an outlier The reason there isn’t loads of vegan restaurants is that almost every restaurant has reasonable vegan options nowadays so there’s no need for vegan only ones
Demand for vegan has dropped quite significantly, Heck sausages have reduced their vegan range from ten options to two, Greggs have scrapped the vegan steak bake, a couple of restaurant chains have binned the vegan options and supermarkets have significantly reduced the shelf space they give to vegan ranges. There's even been an increase in meat sales in some areas, apparently due to the popularity of smashed burgers.
I think supermarkets are ditching the ultra-processed ****e that is vegan. That’s what I’m told anyway, it’s not a shelf I frequent very often!
Processed meat alternatives not selling as well as previously does not prove a reduction in demand for vegan food. It’s expensive, compared to tortured food, but also compared to real plant based food. Most vegans gradually learn to cook, if they couldn’t already, (or in my case make sure I’m married to someone who can cook ) and therefore there is less need for buying meat alternatives. The main cause of spend on meat increasing is the increased cost of it (volume did go up by 0.4% in 2024…which is less than half of the rise in population) which has increased by about 6%
I saw one of Ian Davies's first games for City, could even have been his debut, v Halifax at Boothferry Park. Long time ago, and again from memory, I'm sure it was one of the first games after Receivership had been announced and an appeal for support had gone out. Over 8,000 turned out for a midweek game which was nearly double our previous home attendance. Ian Davies, local lad, only about 18, tall and athletic playing in midfield was superb, a really classy debut ( if it was) and he scored a stunning goal in a 1-0 win, which I'm sure someone will check on Wikipedia. Then disaster struck, he was involved in a crunching tackle and broke his leg. I don't think he played for the first team again. Always wondered what happened to him.
