Hi djsowtz,
Actually, since I emigrated to Canada in '72, I've always resided in and around Toronto. However, I've been to BC many times and loved the whole experience on those trips.
Was your Grandpa involved in the Aluminium production industry by any chance. I ask because Alcan (now Rio Tinto Alcan) was the major industry and biggest employer in Kitimat, BC and was on a short list of companies I was interested in joining at the time (had a Mining and Mineral Engineering education background). Decided on staying in Toronto because 2 of my old schoolmates from Hull had come over here a year before I did and I felt settled there.
I ended up in BC a number of times over the intervening years ( Whistler, Vancouver, Nanaimo} where friends from Toronto ended up permanently - natural vacation destinations for me and the missus beckoned.Went on football tours in Vancouver and also on golf trips with other mates on the island..
On one trip, around '84 ish, took a road trip on Vancouver island with a mate and our wives from Victoria, up the East coast via Nanaimo and then across to Tofino on the Pacific coast. We actually passed through French Creek and spent the night in Qualicum Beach. My memory is failing somewhat , but I think we had a round of golf at a course in French Creek, or was it Qualicum?
Anyway, hope I didn't bore you with these reminiscences, but lasting memories from a beautiful part of the world on the the West coast. I assume you've visited your family members out there?
No, I love hearing these stories, could talk about it forever, as many posters on here will have noticed! Yes, Heinz worked at Alcan in Kitimat! I lived there for a while when I was 4/5, went to school there. I could have sworn you were around the Island, not sure why, it is a magical place! I’ve been to Toronto a few times, mainly for Niagara, but really to see the Jays who I have been following since 85. Exciting times this season, hopefully we can keep it up, like I’m sure City will! My Aunt married a guy from Guelph.
