£5 million for a box-to-box midfielder when we already have several number 8s would be a poor allocation of resources. We need a defensive mid, two strikers and a left-back. Why waste millions on a position that isn’t a priority? It’s like signing Rushworth last summer. We didn’t need him either but on paper he was considered ‘better’ than both Pandur and Racioppi.

Probably indicates both Puerta/Alzate are probably going imo

O’Brien is very much in the Rice mould. He can do both at a good level for the champ, if we get Zambrano that’s our DM for a good few years, O’Brien can easily cover the period til he returns

Its all speculation.... The manager hasn't seen anyone train yet... Nothing will happen for the next 2 weeks... other than ZAMBRANO.... pleeeeeease!!!!
I'd rather we bought somebody fit and ready to start in August, not someone who's breached doping regulations and who seems to be a speculative punt to make Illicali a fast buck...

I question the morality of this Club with odd decisions like this.

I’m a bit sick of City shoehorning short-arse box-to-box midfielders into defensive midfield too.

Instead of signing someone to ‘cover’ Zambrano until November at the earliest (probably much longer until he’s starting games), why don’t we just sign an actual defensive midfielder? Crazy thought, I know…

Morality doesn’t really fit the bill it’s an innocuous doping charge in football no one’s getting hurt, perfectly acceptable to find value in opportunities like this. Highly possible he’s a top operator and well worth the punt especially with how this has enabled us to get him. Risk has always strongly linked to reward.

Wheres all our money coming from?

Feel like every signing we make costs at least 3m

I can't understand the clamour for risk and/or reward here?

Bringing in players with a view to punting on at profit is the reason we narrowly avoided relegation last season and I'll be as brutally honest as I possibly can be here when I state...I couldn't give 2 hoots how much this increases the Turks bank balance by,that's not why I support the Club.

But Ric.... if the club is for sale and starts do half ok... any buyer will look at the assets and future value of those assets...

Because Slater would go for 50k if we sold him right now!

We paid 50k for Slater. After everything I've seen of both players, I'm not seeing what exactly the extra cost would bring in that would demand £5m be spent on O'Brien.

Half that, sure, that's fair enough, but there's no way in hell we should be paying a hundred times more for Lewis O'Brien than we did for Regan Slater.

Also, I don’t remember him being that good when he played, at least not as good as people make out. I understand he was playing under Walter but he didn’t really stand out in that midfield. He did okay. He looked tidy on the ball. He scored a decent goal. Simons managed to do all that under Walter too. I’m not suggesting Simons is as good as Zambrano but Simons often started ahead of him. Zambrano was like a 6.5/10 in nearly every game for us.

The point is, if we do sign him, we should not be expecting him to be one of the best players in the league when he returns.
