I live in Port Glasgow, which has “Robert Street”, Scotland’s Chernobyl. If you’ve not seen the videos, give it a google hahaha

Tenement housing....Stick it in the West End(Byers Rd etc) and it's worth a fortune.

Definitely worth it, once the political situation calms down again. The danger now is the airport being shut down and Iran and Israel using the country as a proxy battlefield, as per usual. The coastline is incredible. I was there last six years ago for four days (our annual holiday together!) and had to entertain myself whilst my wife was lecturing, so drove and checked out beach restaurants/bars/hotels - sort of a relaxed French atmosphere. It had been a period of calm, so wasn't dangerous and quite a lot of Italians and French holidaying there.

The militias are supposed to be in the hilly, grape growing regions and this is where Israel shells every time it kicks off, but I found this to be the friendliest area - restaurant owners topping up your drinks on the house and sending out extra food/aperitifs, end up chatting with English-speaking locals about rugby league etc. ;)

There's a town/city called Byblos that you can get a 45 minute taxi from Beirut to, that is worth half a day visit, it's supposedly the oldest city in the world.. good to walk around and then get a pavement table in a cafe and drink coffee and people watch for an hour. You can see most of the country in five days.. not cheap though.

The only issues you might have are if you're averse to cigarette smoke, meals that last until the early hours of the morning and obviously and controversially for any holiday destination, if you're openly gay and with partner.

It sounds incredible and backs up what I’ve seen. Last point not a problem for me, I would be trying to take a Lebanese wife home , I think they’re beautiful, as others have mentioned.

It’s dilapidated now. They’ve been trying to knock it down for some time, but some landlords have been refusing to sell. There’s one guy refuses to move, he has a sign in the window saying, “I live here”, but the building is crumbling and he has the only windows in the entire block. Lots of people are trying to burn it down, it goes on fire at least 3 times a week.

Where does your username originate from? It sounds very Icelandic, but I could of course be totally barking up the wrong tree!

It's old Nordic - it was the local nickname of my smallholding/sheep farm that I bought here in Norway, named because of a 'hammer'-shaped rock that is on the land jutting out into a small river.

Ah! You’re in Norway, I did a lot of work with a-ha, I’ve been about 12 times I think. Love Oslo, haven’t been for a while. Last time I did MTV Unplugged with them up at Alėsund which I’m desperate to go back to. There was a Norwegian pilots strike and I had to get a taxi to Oslo pretty much straight after the gig in order to make my plane home, otherwise there wasn’t a single flight out of Oslo for another 2 weeks. So I’d love to go back and investigate more.

Just to clarify, they cancelled my flight from Alėsund at 6pm, hence the mad dash in a taxi to Oslo.

More likely to be Thor or Odin in this instance.

It could conceivably originate from Nordic/Germanic words meaning "home" and "dale" (as in valley).
I used to work for an Iron Ore mining company North of Trondheim in Norway called Fosdalens Bergverks A/S which I was told when there by the locals that it translated into "waterfall valley". They spoke excellent English.
    Beautiful country and people.
