Heard similar. Groups of people expecting the UK government to get them out. They'd gone for family events and 'travel'. Why should the government have to bail them out when they've made their own choices to go there? Next breath folks complain about the nanny state.

Fantastic country, mate. Great food, wine, beaches, mountains and people. Been several times over the last twenty years as my ex wife was a visiting professor at the university of Beirut.

We should help build them an airport there like the one in Pakistan that Labour MP said we should to save his constituents such a long journey from the existing one.

Beirut was always on the European 'Grand Tour' up until the 60's/early 70's but got a bit dangerous after that! I transited through Beirut airport once and that kind of put me off. Whereabouts do you go where you feel safe?

Hard to not get into politics, but the US bombing/involvement in Iran will put the democracy and women's rights progress there back a decade as it strengthens the hard liners. Already concessions/changes made by the unpopular regime have been rolled back due to the country going onto war footing. Sad times. Trump got suckered into US involvement into a 'local' war by the Israelis.. something that US presidents have avoided for decades.

Been all over as it's a small country. The wine regions are supposedly where the most dangerous area are, but also feel the safest, stupidly. There's areas of Beirut that aren't exactly welcoming as a foreigner, but no different from most cities. The beach areas are fantastic with great cliff top restaurants along the coast. Just makes no sense logically why the country is in a mess... Politics, eh.

My old man when he was in the navy said Beirut was one of the best places he’d ever been to. Gorgeous women and a beautiful place

Just in the name of accuracy, he didn’t say we should do anything at all, he wrote to the government in Pakistan telling them that they should build an airport.

I’ve always wanted to go there. I’ve watched quite a few documentaries etc. and it looks amazing.

I did some work in Beirut maybe ten years ago, incredible city. You have to be careful and keep your head down a bit, but then again that’s true in Wakefield too!

Would steer clear just now, mind.

Yeah, agree, good advice to steer clear of Wakefield.

(had the 'pleasure' of going there once a week for a year or so not long back. Absolute **** hole.)

Indeed. After objecting to expanding Heathrow due to it affecting climate change, net zero etc, etc…

In my first job in the early eighties they wanted someone to go to Beirut to sort out some IT problem. I politely declined. Think it's a bit safer nowadays though.
