Fact is his work rate and defending have actually got worse. His defending was always his weakest part o his game, especially tracking a runner, but it used to be said that he could defend when he wanted too, but he seems to bought his own hype about being some creative master genius, so doesn't feel the need to work hard to defend so it's all declined further.

He's been doing a pretend gamble on the intercept move for 2 seasons.

Oh oops woe is me I missed the ball and now I cant get back in time.

Situations where it's patently obvious he needs to drop and track his man and make a tackle or block become oh I went for the ball and then they are straight through in his channel for others to deal with while he walks back.

Those are the ones I particularly hate to see as the 4 or 5 yards forward are easy compared to 20 or 30 yards running back.

Tsimikas made an interesting point about the defensive changes Slot made, introducing a rule where upon loss of possession everyone has to be behind the ball within 5 seconds, so I can see Slot's point about Trent.

the reason i've been calling his attitude to defending is the fact it was a regular occurrence to see Trent just gently jogging back as 2 midfielders raced past him to get to the vacant RB position in fact on quite a few occasions forwards got there before him . On the other hand he covered the ground really quickly when heading towards opponent goal.

He just wants to be a brand, he said something like 'it's refreshing to actually be learning' or something like that which was a clear slur on Klopp. Then a year later Slot is saying what he's saying. Trent cares about Trent, and thinks he is above methods because he can hit a breath-taking pass every now and again.

We can't rewrite history and pretend or ignore how vital he was to the team. Given that he appeared to have given up here after Madrid's approach, I don't know if he's strong enough or determined enough to push through any problems he'll encounter at Real. A poor debut doesn't set the standard.

For Alonso to ALREADY be calling out TAA it must be pretty bad. I can't see him lasting in Spain. Go to a Crystal Palace level club next so he can be a star-man and maybe captain.

I suspect he wouldn't come back here (unless it's the very end of his career). If he left Real Madrid, I think rather than going to another big club, I suspect he would go somewhere semi-big where he can be the big fish. I think that's what he really craves. He will go where HE is the star player and everyone loves him.
