Just got back from an evening with Steve Bruce at Hull City Hall and probably like everyone else who packed the place out tonight I came home thinking I wish he was still our manager. First spotted him walking up Whitefriargate with Peter Chapman taking in the delights of the old town. Chapman was the man who brought Bruce to Hull in the first place and a man who worked with him at City as Vice President until a falling out with Ehab. He told me he hasn't set foot in the stadium since but still follows the club.
The first half was mainly about Bruce's playing career, compared by an ex Arsenal player who's name I didn't quite catch, a cockney Perry Groves ?, loud, brash and foul mouthed, all that Steve Bruce wasn't.
Bruce along with Peter Beardsley were the only two young players not signed up from Wallsend Boys Club and both went to Gillingham for trials, Bruce was signed up, Beardsley wasn't because they said he was too small.
He later moved to Norwich in a £100k deal and scored two own goals on his debut. Then Alex Ferguson came calling and he went to Man U for £800k, he spoke very highly of Ferguson as a manager and learnt a lot from his man management which he said was top class. He also said the hardest player he came up against whilst a young player at Gillingham was Billy Whitehurst. Said Whitehurst terrified him, also a story about when Bruce was at Sheff Utd and Billy was running the pub across the road. He used to organise bare knuckle fights in the pub yard behind the pub on Sunday afternoons and invited him down. Bruce didn't turn up but Billy did next day at his office asking why, Bruce said he **** himself. Best players he played with? Paul McGrath who could drink 20 pints of Guinness in 30 mins, Brian Robson, and Pallistar who signed for Man U from Boro. In the second half he said Cantana was the best.
Second half, supposed to a question and answer session.
His time at City was finally mentioned. Best player? Elmohamedy, Steve Quinn at £50k, Brady, Chester, Robertson one of his best signings, said he turned up at the training ground holding his mothers hand and Maguire who couldn't get into the team at the time.
Worst? Prostwich the only German ever to miss a penalty. £2.5m waste of money.
Ben Arfa was a lazy bastard who wouldn't move out of the centre circle.
Said we had a very good team, tight, no big heads, and a good scouting system which brought them all together. We even had Fergusons assistant at Man u scouting for us in Scotland. Biggest regret on who he didn't sign for City? Van Dyke when he was at Celtic. He was tipped off and asked Peter Chapman to see if we could raise the £12m asking price, he eventually signed for Southampton.
Was interviewed for the England job whilst at City, lost out to Big Sam.
Fell out with Ehab after he dismantled the scouting system, his days were numbered then, couldn't work with him and walked out.
Not many managers walk out of a PL club like he did. Also thought the reasons given for the name change was bullshit and sapped his energy.
FA Cup Final. Big regret was playing McGreggor who had missed six games through injury, said he regrets bringing him back and that he should have saved the first goal. Said he maybe wasn't fit enough. Also said Wegner told him that he'd have been sacked if Arsenal had of lost that game.
There was loads more in what was a fabulous night of football talk and tales from a true football legend. He spoke very well all night and was very humble and funny and I also thought he was a bit emotional at the end from the reception he got.
Great night.
It was a sad, sad day when he was allowed to walk out of Hull City. Said he often reflects on it and wonders if it was his fault, if he could have done things any different............

What could have been...

I was surprised how many where there. I'd say it was 95% full, which included the balcony and it wasn't cheap. £35 and £70/75 a ticket. I don't know how many the City Hall holds but I'd guess at 500 maybe more? The compare did say at the end that Bruce was surprised how well the tickets sales went and on the numbers who turned up, so thanked us all etc etc.
I was surprised when you said it was packed as I looked at tickets last weekend and there were tons on sale, I was worried it would be embarrassing for him talking to an empty place. I wonder if they gave a load away or something?

Sold "about" 555 plus a handful of comps

I just cant imagine all of those tickets selling in 3 days. When I looked there were even seats left near the front row, hardly any on the top and tons in the main section. Perhaps the online system was playing up.

Hardly any of them sold in the run up. Either they opened up the doors to let anyone in, or it wasn't as full as it may have seemed

Did you buy any? The downstairs looked pretty full to me and If you think that Hull City Council would just open the doors and let anyone walk in for free you are in cloud cuckoo land. It took a while to get in and passed security even when you had a ticket.

Correct, so that should bring you to the second part of my OR statement.
I didn't attend, so I'm not using my eyeballs to guess the number of tickets sold. I'm not guessing at all.

Id be hugely surprised if it’s Cleverley. He doesn’t seem Acun’s type at all.

What no Sinik? Knows the club inside out, must know at least some of the players and the physios. On good terms with the owner.

Bruce thought at 34 he had the chance of playing in a World Cup but had to pull out because if he declared himself as Irish it would have fell foul of the quota of foreign players in a squad and Man U had already reached that quota.

Hmmm, not sure that makes sense. Just because you play for another country doesn't mean you are foreign. If the FA (or whoever enforces the rules) had tried to exclude Bruce on those grounds I'm sure the legal standing of that would be easily questioned. All they would have to do is show a passport. and were RoI even classed as foreign? I know that they are a foreign country but the CTA (which predates EU) means individuals are often not treated as such ... "For example, in the early 1990s, the FA implemented a "3+2" rule, which allowed clubs to field a maximum of three foreign players and two "assimilated" foreign players (players who had been with the club for a long time). However, Irish players were not considered foreign under these rules, thanks to the CTA and the historical ties between the countries."

Maybe its like his police escort story at Sunderland? Utter bullshit.

Can't imagine he would come here. He's built a decent reputation and can probably bide his time waiting for a more appealing job.

Sunderland were after him and even appointed a caretaker for half a season in order to be ready for his departure from Reims, only for him to jilt them in favour of Lens. I would have thought zero chance of him ending up here.

Strikes me that Mowbray might be the most likely out of that bunch. Seems to be happy adopting a coaching role making the most of the players others bring in (at least until results go the wrong way and he blames lack of control over transfers as the reason).
