Agree that tried and tested is probably the way forward, language barrier issues etc, but I thought I'd mention someone nobody else would have heard of.

No idea how you've mentioned Alves and Pele in the same sentence based on that vid though. Yup he scored 7 of Heerenveen's 9 that day against the 3rd worst defence in the league (1.88gpg conceded), but none of them were even 'good' goals. They all relied on no more than the following four things:
1) Good positioning against a high line of defence.
2) Woeful Goalkeeping Errors (Goals 1, 2, & 5)
3) Woeful Defender Errors (Goals 3, 5, 6, & 8)
4) Incisive Supply from a teammate (Goals 1, 6, 7, & 8)

Ironically, the best goal of the 9 by far is the 4th scored by Gerald Sibon (ex Sheff Wed).

I think even I'd go as far as saying that 6 of Alves' 7 (the free-kick being the exception) would be finished by anyone on here who has played at Sunday League level or higher.

Lat

Most of the Dutch speak very good English. I imagine his English is a lot better than Papa Waigo's, who used Morgan Schneiderlin as an interpreter!

You don't want Fryatt, he's blind in one eye and has one leg longer than the other, if you watch him you'll notice that he mainly runs in circles. And he's injury prone, I know he hasn't actually missed a game for us yet, but he was definitely out at Leicester at least once and I believe he only had a broken jaw. You don't want a slacker like that.

I'd go for McCormack if I was you. <ok>

One leg longer than the other, he sounds a bit like Garrincha then...

Maynard, Sharp, J Rod etc etc. All have merit (and I believe we'll get Sharp anyway) but none represent a "big" signing. I think we'll be landing someone else too.

All 3 of those would cost a good £2m or more, which is a big signing in the context of the Championship. What sort of "big transfer" were you anticipating?

Cortese said that the signing would "shock the football world" if the OP was correct. None of these tick that box for me. Yes £2m is a big championship signing but I believe that we'll be spending in the context of the prize itself rather than the division we're currently playing in. That's PL fees and £2m doesn't go far there. I may well be completely wrong, particularly given our historic record transfer fees (and indeed, astute player identification and trading) but I genuinely expect that figure to be broken significantly in January. Cortese has always delivered on his promises to date and doesn't seem the type to use throw away lines at a fans' dinner simply for reaction.

We always get our hopes up, so I'd prefer to wait and see. I wish we could hear it straight from the horse's mouth (if they could find one still with a head anywhere near Southampton)...words get altered by each person who retells a story. If we raise our hopes too high, the signing of a perfectly good player will be greeted with disappointment (remember Jos!). Whoever they are they must fit into the team..we don't want a big name on a downward slide unless he's got the enthusiasm to put in the hours on the training pitch. David Beckham comes to mind...damn, now you've got me doing it.

Stupid one this, but going Swiss, that Shaqiri lad at Basle would be bloody awesome. Very wishful thinking obviously. Still, there are gems to be had from abroad with smaller pricetags to be had.

And xhaka both class young players.

I believe that Basel were turning down bids of 8 mil + from some of Europes elite for Shaqiri after the U21 Euros and with Basel getting through to the knockout stages of the Champs League I think it very unlikely that any of their first teamers would want to leave.

True we can but dream.

None of these elite teams had Nicola Cortese as their chairman did they? <whistle>

Dream or not, he would be phenomenal!

I did say very wishful thinking. If someone gets him for £8-10 million they will have pulled off a coup. His quality is there to see.

The issue with all these top Chapionship strikers is that the low end Prem teams are chasing them and are prepared to pay £40k a week which we wont so not expecting to get them
If we do then great but low on expectation
I am hopeful that NA and NC can pull a rabbit out of the hat from somewhere!

you can have dave kitson if you want. I'll pay you to have him and will even carry him to the doorstep of sm myself.

No thank you..! <laugh>

Seriously though, what has happened to Kitson..? He is absolutely bloody useless. I wouldn't trust him to pass water accurately, over a toilet, let alone pass to a teammate. And as for scoring..? He couldn't score with a prostitute on lean times. <doh>
