Yeah signing a deal with a release clause seems best for both parties.
It’s not necessarily in his or his agent’s best interest to maximise the fee Sunderland get though. The lower the fee, the more money they can command themselves in the total package.
Financially it isn't best for him - as a sunderland fan it's best for him to benefit the team while still being allowed to leave imo.

Of course but I guess it depends is his priorities are his own income or his team. It’s hard to judge players for putting their own interests first when it comes to “business”. Especially if they have agents advising them certain ways (not saying that’s the case here)

I always see professional footballers as only supporting one club anyway and that’s the team they play for. I don’t think Neil would necessarily compromise his own career or income to maximise the transfer fee Sunderland can get.

I think it makes more sense for both the club and him to make/accept an offer that reflects what league we end up being in - should we stay in the league I would imagine there would be an offer on the table with a release clause that expired upon promotion or something of the like.
I also don't think signing a deal with us would either compromise his career or income as any team who seriously wants him would still be able to buy him.
If there is 1 player who leaves this January, who I think would derail our bid for promotion, it is Neil. Must not be allowed to happen, and I dont think it will be.

I mean neither of us know what sort of offers he's got tbf - maybe we can be competitive with wages. I get what you're saying with the analogy though despite it being at one extreme. I just think a one year extension allows him to still move to any club that would be interested, secures us financially, allows him the option to stay at the club he wants to be at etc.
