They originated in france in the French assembly in 1789 where those who sat to the right of the speaker were aristocrats or church affiliated and had places of honour whereas those on the left side were common as muck. Socialism is naturally linked to "left wing" as again it was coined in france. Liberalism is even older stemming from England.
