It did look horrific what I saw, it was ram packed and the car went full throttle along the whole market, no where for people to go because it was so busy, so they were just an easy target, especially you hit a kid or someone frail.

I'm on the committee for one of the outdoor markets that I trade at regularly and we had to draw up a detailed plan alongside the Town Council, the Police and the Security team we use regarding road closures, manning access points, crowd control, entrances and exits etc. We also have a Police presence during the markets which is determined by the Police themselves, but I've seen sniffer dogs, armed police and no doubt plain clothed officers in amongst the crowds.

We have a security team on every access point where the road is closed, with barriers across the road and checks for every vehicle going in and out. I know you can't cover every angle, but I am surprised that there's been another incident with a car ramming into pedestrians in Germany, because I would have thought they would be ultra sensitive to that from a security perspective given the history out there.

Yeah that's what should be done mate, don't know how the hell this managed to happen again, it shouldn't even be able to turn into the pedestrian way for the stalls. Going to be lots of questions how this was allowed to happen again.

I don't know the layout of the town where this has happened, but surely the planning for this would have taken into account the need to mitigate against any deliberate attempt to drive a car into a pedestrian area, especially given the catastrophic consequences of what has happened before.

If you can't guarantee that, then imo you either move the market to somewhere where you can, or the legislative body for the town simply doesn't issue a licence for it to take place. It looks like they've taken a massive gamble on that, and it's blown up in their face.

No events in this video, just a layout of the area...

This is a section of the market, from what I've seen it's in the centre square, surrounded by buildings, with a ring road on the outside. So there is only about three access points, because one is bollarded off, skim through this video and you can see it can't be that difficult to manage...

This gives you an overhead view of the area...No vehicles should have been able to get in here at all...it's just sloppy security.

I'm saying that at the time they got released it was reported they had not been charged yet, with any offence. as far as I am aware they've only been charged today with a specific offence.

So I'd say my self proclaimed gangsta remains intact

Although that's on a bigger scale, it's not dissimilar to ours. We are in a central piazza that has a road running down one side of it. The access points at each end are bollard controlled and there are physical metal barriers at other points to allow emergency access for Ambulances etc.

During the markets, all of those points are manned and extra security and barriers are put in place. Every vehicle is checked (traders obvs have to get to their stalls to unload etc) and when that is done, the roads are closed completely to traffic.

From that picture above, it looks as though those access points shouldn't be too difficult to manage. Unless the driver has just ploughed through any physical barriers that were put in place. You could put concrete blocks in place I suppose, but then it makes it difficult for access for traders.

    Anyway, this is our one.

I'm going to guess the main access point in off the ring road is too wide and probably has no barrier. How they resolved that in Canterbury is by having automated bollards that pop up out the ground. That incurs a huge cost but if that square is used for regular events (which I suspect it is) and not just the annual Christmas market, then it's money that has to be spent these days for security. I obviously appreciate the driver could have knowledge of a weak point and come in from somewhere else.

Yep, we have one of those automated bollards at the access to the main ring road. And the Piazza is used year round for the regular farmers market.

I don't understand why he or any past attackers would do it. It's a market that will be attended by people from all walks of life, and tourists as well as locals, as these events are advertised with many travel agents. So when you go out and do this, you are killing and injuring people of all ages, of all religions, of all nationalitys and so on, so what's the message in these type of atrocities, because I'm not understanding it.

Yeah, remember there being a few Irish Catholic offspring with the Birmingham pub bombings.
Always thought if they wanted to bring the country to its knees, rather than kill innocent people why not blow up, Manchester shipping canal bridge on m6, spaghetti junction, Severn bridge, Dartmouth tunnel, Humber bridge etc, would create total chaos

Read that they did have concrete blocks to keep traffic out at this market. But that at one point it was wide enough to get a car through ….
