There's been a post over the road about the implications of the new online safety act and forums. Doesn't make good reading https://www.readytogo.net/smb/threads/the-end-of-the-forum-is-nigh.1646227/ For those that don't frequent rtg there is also a link to another big online forum that explains it https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/401475/
The lfgss description of it is excellent. It looks to be end of forums. Not sure how this place could navigate it all. Maybe set it up as international and ensure members use vpns to access? Make it private and not public and charge a fee, not sure that would get round the regs or not?? Or we all jump ship and make a private discord and chat on there? Not sure there is any other loop holes and this place is likely to be gone for good. I don't go on rtg anymore but that place is huge and so many people communicate on there.
Had no idea this had even been passed never mind coming into effect so soon. The forum has about 3 months left as there is no way forums can continue to run under that act. I think this could be devastating and have some serious effect on people across the UK as forums they have come to rely on close leaving them isolated whether from social interaction or just support as they are part of a forum with people going through same thing etc...
A discord would be the way to go imo. Although it wouldn't be quite the same it seems like it would be better than WhatsApp or similar.
Yeah. There are many who use these players as a community to chat and express thoughts and feelings that otherwise wouldn't come to pass. That is a dangerous thing to remove.
Yeah, that's all I can think of really. It wouldn't be the same or have the same functionality between threads but I could see a way of creating the channels as key topics and chat in there.
Yeah. A match day topic have to be ongoing for example and I've only briefly used Discord but I'm not sure if there as a way to go to the last unread post as you can on here. When you come home from graft you can just click it and you go straight to where you were up to and can catch up. Won't be the same but will be better than nothing. I'm just thinking about the amount of forums over the years I've dropped jn and out of for some great advice on anything from contesting a parking ticket to when I owned a marine fish tank.
Seems to be a sledgehammer to crack a nut, I can't see how any forum owner would want the responsibility or worry of ensuring constant compliance
If this comes off if be totally gutted. I'm hopeless at IT and find using this forum keeps me up to date with all things SAFC related. Don't post anywhere else as basically don't know how too, if needs be I'd have to get my finger out and learn I suppose. Hope it's not all doom and gloom.
It seems like it's not knowing how to achieve the goal so they have put out a law that effectively stops everything just to make sure. Forums have been perfected over the years and work perfectly for what we all want from here imo. Discord is a bit of a mess in comparison and will definitely be a poor replacement but it seems like it will be one of the only ways to do it.
I’m happy to set up a discord in collaboration with anyone for Sunderland in case I’m frequent with using it not sure how many are and should be able to set up something decent it seems to be the end of forums
On the plus side though, the cowardly and lifeless moderators will lose their only authority in life. Back to being the bullied.
It’s an app where you can make servers that people join and chat / voice call. It can be set up to have different sections etc where you can create topics and other things so would be similar ish to this
I googled "uk forums closing down", and there's quite a few with similar comments to here. Found this one interesting... Looks like the OP has copied the rtg statement, but the 5th reply (by digitalscream) is the interesting one, looks like he's the owner of that particular forum. Sad state of affairs, i'd be gutted if this place went. Hopefully this link works. https://www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/276080/have-forums-reached-the-end-of-the-road
Yeah I am canny on it too. I would be careful and check with whoever has the rights to this place, allows it. Otherwise you may get burned.
