So was Saddam. Look how well it worked out toppling him.

That's the problem in Syria too. If Assad is toppled, there are rival warlords who will be vying for power.

Don't really understand what's going on in Syria, just sounds the usual madness of war.

Sounds like a dictator and friend of Putin is being removed though, so I suppose there's some positive in that, until the next madman rules the area.

So grateful I can lead a peaceful life in the UK, where all I have to put up with is shhite weather, although I like the cool so no complaints there, not the wind so much, but think we escaped the worst of it.

Good to see Trump showing some frinedship to France today, Macron very good at playing the host and ensuring things run smoothly, bit awkward when posing with Zelenskyy, but the fact they are in the same room is good enough for me, well done Mr Macron. Hopefully another war that will end soon.

I count my blessings every day that myself and my family are safe from the horrors of what some people have to endure in Gaza, Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon.

There are too many ****ing madmen in the world who are allowed to dish out utter hell on innocent people. And a lot of them backed with weapons sold by the UK and the US. It's a sad indictment on humanity when people can find a way to justify the slaughter of children and innocent people whilst they sleep in their beds. <cry>

Toppling Saddam wasn’t the problem. The Iraqi people celebrated that. US/UK let the Iraqis down by not putting anything in place for after he was gone. That is what created the monster and turned the Iraqi people against us.

Bit silly to blame the imperial powers when the whole region has been fighting each other since at least the dawn of writing.

True (to an extent) but by forcibly consolidating wildly diverse groups under arbitrary 'unified' leadership, those decisions opened the door for that fighting and violence to claim the lives of hundreds of thousands at a time. The scale was previously unthinkable and yes, the imperial powers has to shoulder it's fair share of the blame.

I think what would have happened is the ethnic group that had the best geographical position and therefore most wealth would simply have steamrolled the weaker neighbors and then declared for the appropriate side during the cold war to consolidate their merciless regional dominance for years to come.

But that's the cynic in me.

Didn't take long for Damascus to fall. Bad news for Iran.

I wonder who has given sanctuary to the monster who gassed and carpet bombed half a million of his own people.

Anyone who does is complicit in their murder.

Possibly Qatar will give him refuge like they have with the Hamas leadership? I’ve seen reports saying he could well be in UAE.

The main thing for now is he’s gone and the Syrian people have hope, again.

Hearing that Assad's plane has disappeared from radar after leaving Syria heading for Russia.

Speculation that it's been shot down

Wouldn’t surprise me. Russia have form for that. Remember that Wagner guy was invited out on a plane ride one day and got blown out the sky.

Ukrainian guy found dead in his car not far from where I live. Apparently moved over with his wife when Russia invaded, him and his wife later split up. He took on a job with Royal Mail but couldn’t settle and has done himself in by the sounds of it <rose>

Yeah he was an enemy of the Russian state though. Once his failed coup was over, he was a dead man walking (or falling to the ground)

Assad was apparently seeking shelter in Moscow. There are some conflicting reports about which plane he may have been on though. But apparently one was seen heading towards the Syrian coast before doing a U turn, then losing altitude before it disappeared from radar

    No wreckage being reported though.

Large Syrian population round here just drove home from work and there's a huge celebration in our city centre.

Entire families out all with flags cheering.

It appears that Assad is safe in Russia based on their statement of him "stepping down" as president

    Assad in Russia, confirmed.

Israel has seized the Golan buffer zone.

Israel has been bombing Iranian bases across Syria.

    Russian diplomats looking depressed.

I assume Assad served a Russian purpose, he no longer serves that purpose, he is now a hinderance, Putin doesn't like weakness, especially one that is now a problem.
