I heard this as a thing 5 years ago. It’s a plan on Tyneside. The knacker who was saying it was a scouser. I asked was that like Liverpool being part of Greater Greater Manchester and he shut the fck up.
Some of that goes back to the Newcastle capital of culture bid and it's bastard offspring, the Newcastle - Gateshead initiative. You even had talk of the "twin cities of the Tyne" forming a "city of the Tyne" about 15 years or so, and it's still an ambition for some through there. It's not helped by certain places in north Tyneside referring to themselves as part of Newcastle, despite how much other areas of the north east suffered through Tyne and Wear County Council and the Tyne And Wear Development Corporation funding Newcastle at other areas expense.
