Any pensioner owning a property, whatever its value, is not entitled to plead poverty in my opinion. They don't necessarily have to sell their properties, although it would probably help if some did. Money can always be raised from equity release. Or perhaps they should cancel their Netflix subscriptions as they are keen to tell young people, who really are struggling due to ludicrous property prices.
A pensioner who owns a property outright may well be thinking of it in terms of paying for care home residence in the future, which costs over £1k a week round here, perhaps more (or less) in other parts of the country. Of course they could sell their property, give the money to their kids and hope they survive 7 years to avoid the tax, move into rental accommodation, run down their savings so that if they do need residential care the taxpayer has to pick up the bill.

So they do need the extra £300 then.

Is it me or is Starmer just plain dumb or ill advised? Clearly he had no sense of reality and needs help

An £18m penthouse so his son can study quietly for his GCSEs?

I should have studied harder at school and then gave it all up to become a politician

As someone who never missed an opportunity to lambast the Con Party for their freeloading and promised an end to it Starmer is proving to be a total embarrassment but worse still he really does think it's ok. His lack of self-awareness and judgement is seriously flawed.

My contempt for politicians has never been greater, Guy Fawkes was ahead of his time...

It’s a fiasco mate. He’s telling us we’re up **** creek, the economy ****ed, the public finances ****ed, the NHS ****ed, and worst of all he can’t see the Gooners unless someone buys him a box, and his wife can’t see Taylor Swift twice unless it’s a gift, but there is ‘light at the end of the tunnel’. He’s relying on growth to get us out of a high tax poor public service hole, but he’s stopped talking about growth now, it’s about ‘stabilising’ the economy. This job is way too big for him.

Has everyone forgotten Cameron's austerity already? Or Johnson's freebies and lies? Or Liz Truss crashing the economy? Or Covid corruption?

Ten weeks ffs. Let's at least see what's in the budget next month or perhaps where we are in a year's time (or better, five years' time) before writing off Starmer's government.

When did you become the leader writer for the Telegraph?

No one bought him a box, he was moved to the Directors box which is invite-only.

It's basically a whole load of fuss about nothing, funny watching everyone get so excited about it.

Call me when Starmer is giving taxpayer money away to his friends, family and donors. There's not been any evidence of Lord Alli getting any perks from his gifts. Getting free stuff is not sleaze ffs.

Spoken like a true head in the sand socialist who sees nothing wrong with anything that starmer & co are doing.....

Still live in hope that those involved in tory sleaze are held to account, but won't hold my breath.....

Still live in hope that starmer gets a bit of self awareness, but won't hold my breath.....

Because he disclosed everything and it's not corruption or sleaze. You lot are just desperate to smear him with anything you can. The Telegraph are making up new stories on a daily basis, they're not taking the Tories losing well

My lot?????

Nowt to do with it..... starmer said labour would be a government of service, only thing their serving is themselves.... not a good look on his part..... especially after the way he pontificate about cleaning up politics.....

Anyway Tory sleaze is now history and it's now labour's turn in the headlights..... enjoy the scrutiny....

I'll repeat it. He didn't break any rules. Political parties rely on donations. He didn't steal a penny of taxpayer money or offer any perks to his donors.

Get upset if you want, you're being told to by the right wing media, hopefully you'll be able to figure out the truth one day.
