A pensioner who owns a property outright may well be thinking of it in terms of paying for care home residence in the future, which costs over £1k a week round here, perhaps more (or less) in other parts of the country. Of course they could sell their property, give the money to their kids and hope they survive 7 years to avoid the tax, move into rental accommodation, run down their savings so that if they do need residential care the taxpayer has to pick up the bill.Any pensioner owning a property, whatever its value, is not entitled to plead poverty in my opinion. They don't necessarily have to sell their properties, although it would probably help if some did. Money can always be raised from equity release. Or perhaps they should cancel their Netflix subscriptions as they are keen to tell young people, who really are struggling due to ludicrous property prices.
