He lacks the layer of slime Rodgers came across with (always felt false, like as if he wanted and craved to be liked and be tje centre of attention) and he lacks tje aura of greatness klopp exuded Seems a pretty regular Dutch guy type of way about him
Rodgers always came across as the smarmy business executive type with silly, transparent motivational stunts like the envelope thing. It created a barrier between him and the players and was just a bad idea. Klopp was all about emotion, and that was great - he lived every second with his players and was a leader as much as a boss, but sometimes his emotions got the better of him. Slot seems more approachable than BR, but with more self-control than JK, we'll see if that balance is the right one. Klopp was loved precisely because of his character, and I doubt anyone will ever be as popular again, we just have to hope Slot wins us over with results.
Klopp had the great advantage of being prerecorded as a top top manager due to his real achievements and high regard internationally. Thr usual suspects went straight for it's only Germany or 7 years and blah blah but it was out of sheer fear on their parts. Klopp is a force of nature and as unique as shankly. It won't happen again for a while but we had 2 of these guys and should count ourselves lucky I suppose. Slot just has to be true to himself. We had Paisley who was very different then ***an who was different again and then of course Kenny. Kenny had the great advantage of being a club and general legend. He was a spiky **** with the media and others ut a players man. He'd cut you in two with comments The souness who was roundly hated by the end as he was very stubbornness made changes thst were not popular but bought badly too. He wouldn't go and the club were too timid to sack him after thr heart issue. Then Evans was too nice and a walk over for players. Thst was his main issue imo. Then houllier came who was thr professor or school master and quite negative in set up but well liked imo. Then rafa who was again quite strict on tactics and systems but again well liked by fans as he was genuine all in. All of these predated social media largely. Then comes Hodgson who was never backed and made bad comments thst lost him any sort of support. Then comes Rodgers who I think people were not very impressed with as the young coach thing but again he came.over as false. The transfer committee stuff really killed him as did the documentary thing. Seeing under the bonnet added to rank buys lost his credibility. Then comes the klopp charisma. Blows away every bad feeling form years and years of issues and makes great buys to back the persona. Slot has a certain feel good squad effect and a certain level of expectation to contend with. Imo he needs good buy sand to instill the belief that this is not going to go tits up. Compared to Rodgers coming in this lad has a decent squad. It's not half as good as some make out amd it's certainly 3rd or 4th best (arsenal and city are ahead imo, other clubs are very close if not better as well) He must make good buys, whenever thry are made. He must be genuine with fans and must understand already the expectations. If he utters one word about not winning is OK he will be gone in 6 months. It's a tick box excerise A) understand fans and their expectations- lfc win things. Fans love hard work and genuine effort week in week out B) understand the squad isn't half as good as some make out, the keeper is, the defence is ropey, midfield lacks balance but has talent going forward, the forwards are not consistent. He has plenty of bodies bit other teams have thst and are better, it's just a fact.t C) he has to get results to make people believe. He can't afford to bin off the leavie cup early or go out of the cl early here. He has to hit tje ground running in the league and at least be ticking over the results. D) a clear slot style has to be evident. If thats fast one touch passing then do that and be up barking at players if they slow the passing down. If fans see a genuine man, who's got a real idea of how to play thst they like and the tram looks well prepared and working hard then they will back him to the hilt imo. Fans won't accept people settling for second best or players looking like they don't Care
Which is ..... ask for as much money as you think you can get? Surely that was set a long time ago. We're 2 years away from Salah getting the big pay increase and there hasn't been an uprising yet.
I didn't like his first interview at all. Then he did the 'meet the press' thing and came across well. This latest interview shows him growing into the role and, for me, realising that he is actually our new manager (or head coach as he is being called) with several 'we's' in there. Curtis has already hinted at how Slot's approach regarding the midfield will be different. Nothing to do but wait and see now.
The first person to ask for 300k plus doesn't have a precedent for anything more than 200k in the club. Salah sat down and had to say de bruyne at cty gets 350k (and rhe rest under the table) or say Ronaldo gets a mil a week in Saudi. The club can say we'll we have a wage structure and can't break this. Then they go back and forth. Trent can walk in and say hey salah in on 350k I want that. I'm the main man. The club can only go back now and say you are not worth that to him, they can't say they love him but can't afford it.
I felt the club dis badly on that first interview. They put very little prep in and didn't give him the questions to think about before either. It was a dull and listless type of thing whereas he went into the press one with a room to engage with and had his head on for it.
Surely a measure of what you're made of is how you handle yourself in a situation where you're thrown unknown questions.
I think the main mistake was what you pointed out. He was talking like an outsider and referring to feynoord. It's about understanding fans. Its not disrespect but lfc fans couldn't give a flying **** about feynoord nor its standards. We respect the club as any club but frankly we are taught by the club that this menas more and all sorts of waffle so fans do think so what? Feynoord? **** off. Stop mentioning feynoord. He has now stopped and got on board so he's not putting anyone's backs up. The second he says 4th is acceptable or not winning or lfc can't expect to win then he is done The best thing klopp did was claim to win a title in 4 years.
Tbf he has said that we can improve on last year's position. That looks like he has ambition. We just need to see that he has capability along with that ambition.
No - the precedent is that we will actually give in to demands that break our policy so the opening is there for the future. I was against giving that amount to Salah at the time and nothing has changed my mind. The fact that the floodgates didn't open immediately is not relevant, what matters is that whenever contracts are due for renewal now and in the future, the club can no longer use the "this is our wage policy and we won't waver" argument. Whether others will be happy to take a wage significantly less than the big earners remains to be seen, but that the precedent has been set is a fact, not an opinion.
I would argue that, by definition, it is only a precedent if it is followed. Until that happens, it isn't a precedent.
Maybe because some people were so desperate for him to be unveiled and have something out in the public so they bundled something together quickly
I liked his first interview and likes how he talked about old club and the respect showed. So in same way you think he maybe should talk about that, maybe you should also not talk as the voice of the fan as not everyone feels that way. I haven’t seen any negative info about any of the interviews he’s done bar a few comments in here
Lfc make more money. Price tickets go up. Inflation goes up. Prize money goes up. Player wages are always going to go up. What is our ‘policy’ on wages. Not one of us here know what it is. Clewrly by giving Salah that it was within the wage budget. You can’t pretend to be a top club playing CL football and challenging for trophies then say we won’t pay anyone over 100k and have the wage budget of a lower prem club and expect players to stay from the goodness of their heart though
The vast majority do. Lfc fans have always been about club winning in living memory (since the 1960s) anyone saying we want and that's OK won't last long. Lfc fans as a whole worship managers who win and show they care.
When we are paying 200k to certain players others were being paid 300 to 400k. Of course there's been a budget and structure. Nobody mentioned 100k. Nobody mentioned lower prem clubs.
It depends where you look. I don't routinely look at comments on a YouTube video but I did on the first and second Slot interviews and there was a good smattering of 'he's not ready for a big club ' type of remark. Obviously every platform, including YouTube, draws idiots and you'd never be able to determine which were 'real' comments from 'real' fans. The point being, there are varying opinions.
