What do you think of the new coal mine in Cumbria planning being quashed, strange one, I thought they would be all for it.

One of several they have decided support should be removed for on legal grounds. Couple of oil drilling projects gone as well.

On the other hand Labour have effectively opened up again the country to onshore wind farms. Mood music suggesting they will even designate them in such a way locations will be approved out of westminster, not locally. I dont like the sound of that personally, lets see where it goes.

The coal mine one baffles me, we buy the same coal from abroad as this mine will produce on our doorstep making loads of work available for an area which is struggling.
I can see the logic if we weren’t importing it.

There is a lot of daft thinking when it comes to trying to be greener, in my opinion anyway.

The legal challenge to the coalmine, as I understand it, is emmissions. When approving it they took into account the mining emmissions, but not the downstream emmissions of the coal itself. If they do that it fails some test in law. Like you say, we are already using the coal so it seems a bit of a false economy. Not to mention the emissions associated with the import of the coal we will now continue to import. The whole decision making process appears to be based on poor quality thinking.

At some point the government are going to need to join the dots on things like this and start making some common sense decisions. Mining coal wont please everyone, and it has a political downside, but not to do it seems very naieve to me.

Anyway, on to building more of these turbines. There are a few round here and some seem to be permanently switched off or not working!

What a cracking speaker David Lammy is anybody who gets Naga Munchetty to shut her trap gets my vote.
What do you think of Labours plans for the country. They must be ok, can’t see any backlash from the Tories.

    She's bloody lovely <nahnah>

It always lovely to see her on Breakfast if only 'cos that means that Sally isn't on :emoticon-0148-yes:
Regarding Sally, she's proof that nepotism works at the BBC 'cos that's the only way that she could be working there . . . . she's absolutely dreadful, and totally unsuitable for that job !

Worthy of 100 likes Gordon.....Sally is utterly shocking, she's even worse than that Welsh lass on The One Show who struggles to pronounce her words properly.
Mind the Tele people have been scraping the barrel for years just to keep the female quotas on our screens.
Don't get me started on female football commentators and pundits:headbang:

She is from Washington, she went to St Roberts School.

On the subject of St Roberts, they now have a Secretary of State, the England goalkeeper and an England opening bowler. Not bad for a local comp. Or is it now the Eton of the north?

The business case, as I understand it, for the mine was based on selling it to steel makers for their furnaces. Yes this is currently been imported.

However the steel industry is moving away from using coal and using electricity and hydrogen for their new furnaces. By the time the mine was due to open it is expected that there will be no demand for its coal in the UK.

Permanently switched off needs reviewing, either they are producing too much electricity for the system to handle, or they are an environmental issue, as broken blades in some places are being burried down x coalshafts...

I'm waiting for the review into the bird deaths from the windfarms on their migration paths...

Also the report into the disposal of the wrong type of batteries we are using in the first generation electric cars. However, I don't hold out too much faith, as the report into the production of the batteries components from mines in Africa seems to have been burried along with the broken blades

Just because she makes yours and Cumberlands Willy twitch doesn’t mean she’s good at her job. If she just kept her yap shut long enough for her guests to answer a question she might learn something.<laugh>
Now Sally that is someone I wouldn’t mind bending over that red sofa <ok>

I would of thought the mining company would have looked into that before spending billions on a new mine, mining coal nobody wants?

At the time they were planning this there was an expectation that steel would be using high grade coal for another 20 years. Now that appears to be down to about 5 years now. As is the way with a lot of business plans key assumptions can change.

At the moment the desire to continue could well be an example of the sunk cost syndrome.

The new govt starting to get into some detail now.

Phillipson rules out help for universities, repeating the mantra of the last 6 years of sort your own budgets out. Quite ironic really when it is the govt who dictates what they can charge and how many students they can recruit. How then to sort out your own budget. I dont think a bailout is right, but the funding model is broken and we have another govt refusing to change it. I predict a serious slump in university provision over the next 4 or 5 years and the impact on the economy will be clear, along with the loss of some of our most worthwhile arts and creative courses.

Also Reeves suggesting a public sector pay award of 5.5% may be accepted is interesting. As the IFS and other economists are saying, that is not consistent with their spending plans. I predict tax rises are coming. I have no problems with rax rises but everyone said during the election campaign Labours plans were not fully costed and now we are getting into the reality of that. I read today that apparently it is the worst economic inheritance since WW2. The thing is we knew that post pandemic/truss/ukraine - it is not news, nor is it an inheritance, it has been that way for a couple of years. Again, to quote the IFS it was predicatble and predicted. Yet our politicians are spinning a narrative that they are only just finding out. I find that entirely disingenuous.

On top of this the challenges around the 2 child cap seem to be growing.

The govt were always going to continue face these challenges. I hope they move quickly to stop the history re-writing, level with us and get the necessary revenue raised through what is probably the only realistic way - personal tax rises. I dont think most will complain if they then spend it wisely. Time for us to put a bit more into the pot I think.

Well I wasn’t expecting that one. Credit to those in the Labour Party for looking at raising the minimum wage and paying young workers the same as adults if they are doing the same job<ok>

I think anything is indefensible if the person is doing the same work.

Well I wasn’t expecting this one either, I missed it being announced that all seniors are getting their £200 heating allowance took off them unless they are on benefits, but she still keeps her £3,400 heating allowance. I should have known the two faced bastard MP’s would still have their snouts in the trough.
