General Election 4th July ...

I have noticed a bit of a thing where candidates move around to regions where they might stand a chance. I do hope the days of local people representing local people arent going. Not sure what it all means, but not having any motivation on local issues cant be helpful. We have 7 candidates on our ballot, and by my reckoning 3 are from outside the electoral boundary.

We're moving further and further from how our electoral system is supposed to work: Communities selecting the best person to represent them, irregardless of party. People now think along party lines and almost treat it like a presidential election. Rory Stewart has spoken of the problems of the system and how it prevents you being a useful advocate for your constituents. PR will only exacerbate that problem, leaving people feeling that they are represented by people who know nothing about them. We need a big reset. Constituencies need to be represented by people who know those constituencies and ministers need to be technocrats. What's the point in an education minister who has never taught?

Of course we need to have people who represent us locally but then we do that through local elections. I think to get buy in though we need everybody to have a person representing what they believe in and that doesn’t happen with governments elected more people have said they don’t want than do. I totally get that having some stranger foisted on you may feel different but if the local representatives have a voice with that person it changes things. There seems little connectivity between MP’s and councillors other than those in the in group.

I have a feeling the current disdain will help breed a new generation of politician, imagine a proper local politician who could speak well and be forthright about the problem sthe country is facing, he would landslide these career politician types.

I agree, but the disease extends beyond the Tories, all the main party speakers in those debates were stiff as a board and towing the line, with Farage and perhaps the SNP bloke being a slight exception.

Absolutely tragic watching the Tories begging for votes to stop Labour having a massive majority.

They seem to believe they should at least be the opposition party otherwise things may go terribly wrong ...

... that's why you're being voted out you useless bunch of tossers

They're like someone who's tried to fix the plumbing in his house but there are leaks everywhere, water is coming through the ceiling and discarded tools lying around that were bought, at great expense, then found not to be fit for purpose.

That would be an extraordinary result. I am not convinced it would be of benefit, but nobody can claim the conservatives have anyone but themselves to blame.

I wonder how many conservatives arent prepared to tell pollsters they will actually vote for them still.

I am planning on stealing every polling card in my house and drawing an amazing love heart in each conservative box personally . Will put a kiss in the labour one and a rose in the lib dem one, just for balance

Agree on the racism card. The tories had to stop the silver surfers/blue rinse brigade from voting in their last leaders election because of their unashamed racism (they had elected the fool Truss over Sunak previously).

Hilarious to see Boris trotting out a series of meaningless catchphrases ...

He managed to make Farage look like the voice of reason, perhaps the only thing his drivel will achieve.

What he actually did was remind people how chaotic this administration has been.

After going through a series of PMs we now have three of them, Sunak, Cameron and Johnson ...

... all trying to convince people they know what they're doing and there's a plan.

Between the three of them they've vehemently disagreed on everything from Brexit to the economy and the NHS.

All this will do, imo, is remind people that Sunak was one of the partygoers at one of Johnson's lockdown parties.

Not really. The English accent is used to demonstrate the different classes in the film. All of us know the difference between cockney and upper class accents. How many of us would know the same difference in French accents?
