Aha, Perry Mason & Della Street (Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale). This show reminds me of going to City matches. in the late 50s, early 60s. My grandad used to take me to BP on Saturdays and I used to stay overnight with him & gran, the latter being an avid fan of the TV series, so I got sucked in as well. Memories - Bill Bradbury, Paul Feasey, Doug Clarke et al. Gran used to give me the odd bottle of beer after the game - parents never got wind of it.

Match report from Gazzetta Dello Sport - translated through Google auto translate, so grammatically clumsy if not weird, but a smart read nonetheless

England, sensational comeback: Bellingham's pearl in the 95th minute, then Kane eliminates Slovakia

Schranz scores in the first half, then Calzona's team resists until added time. Bayern's center forward takes care of it in extra time

From our correspondent Francesco Pietrella

June 30, 2024 (change at 8.54 pm) - GELSENKIRCHEN (GERMANY)

Grab your dream in both hands and unravel it, study it, going beyond the surface. In your deepest memories there is certainly an overhead kick goal scored in the last minute with the team of your life or with the national team. Jude Bellingham made it a reality on a gray June evening, saving England from shame with two minutes left of normal time, deep into added time. Guehi's edge, an athletic gesture from the hat down and a postcard from Gelsenkirchen, where England beat Slovakia 2-1 and harpooned the quarterfinals with the hooks of its best boxers, Jude and Kane, who did well to close it out after a handful of seconds of the first extra half. At the Veltins Arena the strongest wins. Slovakia climbed the summit one pickaxe after another, but fell down in the last fifty meters, almost achieving the greatest feat in its history.

WITH YOUR HEAD HELD HIGH—

England risked the “Calzonazo”. The red thread that was about to tie Alcides Ghiggia to Ciccio Calzona started in Rio de Janeiro and almost reached Gelsenkirchen, where the former Napoli coach held his own against the European vice-champions for 94 minutes. In the 95th minute Jude appeared, and the fairytale came together like the bricks of Shanghai. Ivan Schranz lived an hour and a half as a “Cinderella man”, instead. The Jimmy Braddock of the Veltins Arena. The striker - top scorer with three goals together with Musiala and Mikautadze - danced on a ring made of real grass, making England tremble. In a stadium almost entirely red and white with banners from all over the country: Stockport, Stoke, Carlisle, Oxford, York. Corners of England that crossed the Channel singing “It's coming home”, played at full volume from the stadium. This time it brought good luck.

GELSENKIRCHEN, GERMANY - JUNE 30: Harry Kane of England scores his team's second goal past Martin Dubravka of Slovakia during the UEFA EURO 2024 round of 16 match between England and Slovakia at Arena AufSchalke on June 30, 2024 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. FRAGILITY— Despite the victory, England revealed themselves to be fragile, while Slovakia showed their calling card after just five minutes. The one to receive it was Kyle Walker, who was fouled twice in three hundred seconds: the first by Hancko, the second by Lukas Haraslin, formerly of Sassuolo, who was good at leaving the City full-back behind him and kicking with his right foot. Guehi saved England by sacrificing himself in front of Pickford (11'). Calzona's eleven - with seven players linked to Italy, both past and present - is a tribute to solidity: Lobotka calls for the ball, Duda plays between the lines and the wingers slip like arrows through the English defence. The match is one of those tough, physical ones, where a clash is inevitable: in the first quarter of an hour four players are cautioned, eight in total. Bellingham lights up intermittently, freeing Trippier in the 9th minute, Foden struggles and Kane remains entangled between the shirts of Skriniar and Vavro, the former Lazio centre-back dumped after a bad year and sent back to Copenhagen. Today he did not look out of place in front of the Golden Boot.

IN REVERSE— The goal was a poisoned dart. Strelec, a heavyweight striker who has played for Spezia and Reggiana, hooked a ball with his right foot and rewarded the insertion of Schranz, who was good at beating Pickford after a good control (25'). The mistake was Walker's, guilty of not having moved up with the defense. Not a great match from him. At this point the Slovakians dug in. In the 50th minute the English scored the 1-1 with Foden, but the referee disallowed it for offside. In the 55th minute, however, Strelec tried to fool Pickford from midfield, while in the 66th minute Southgate gave a chance to Cole Palmer, the man with 22 goals with Chelsea submerged by applause. The most sensational opportunity was Rice's: full post in the 81st minute and hands in the hair. Also because Kane shot high on the rebound. England, at least for 94 minutes, looked like a golden shell with nothing inside, but in the end they thanked their talent. The key minutes were the 95th minute of the second half and the 91st minute of the first 15 minutes of extra time: Bellingham's overhead kick and Kane's header on a pass from Toney. No more ghosts, but what an effort. Calzona, on the other hand, will dream several times of Pekakir's right-footed shot that ended high over the crossbar in the 105th minute. An opportunity that was about to turn everything upside down again. The Cinderella of the European Championship says goodbye with her head held high and in tears, while England will face Switzerland . The match will be played on July 6 in Dusseldorf. In a parallel universe, perhaps there is Italy .

Don’t like Bellingham’s post-match comments. I’m paraphrasing but he basically said ‘I hope that shuts up some of the fans who have been critical of us this tournament’.

We have been absolute dog **** across 4 games. The performances have been well below expectations and we’re lucky to still be in the tournament. A bit of humility wouldn’t go amiss instead of having a pop at people who have spent thousands of pounds to watch them play ****.

Dela, old Hull insult from De pa Pole psychiatric hospital. :emoticon-0125-mmm:

The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Part of my upbringing in the 60's was spent at my old Aunt&Uncles house at 100,Beverley Rd(I think it's an office block called 'Grosvenor House' now). They ran a boarding house for Delapole out-patients.They used to get picked up by a bus in the morning and dropped off at night..

From memory, several of the male lodgers were victims of shell shock from WW11.Obviously they, and others, had huge psychological issues but they were nice people and well looked after, nowadays there's nothing for people with severe mental health issues...A stain on our system for many decades.

Christ, you’re even an arrogant, condescending prick when it comes to something as innocuous as the weather.

And yes, I would much prefer 45°C+ arid heat to 30°C humid heat. The biggest downside to higher temperature is the increased risk of sunburn but I’d still rather that than being drenched in sweat and unable to cool down.

Apologies, re-reading my post it did come across far more stroppy than I intended.

You're obviously correct about dry heat being better than humid heat, but once you get over 45 degrees, it's simply unbearable. It's like standing in front of a furnace, you can literally feel your skin cooking the minute you walk into it and nobody goes outside when it's that hot.

I appreciate the apology. Sorry for calling you a prick as well.

Yes it is some nice places to eat and drink

Stayed in Warkworth a few times. Good places to eat and stroll along the river. Only a short journey by bus to Alnwick and Amble.,Buses from Amble run until 11.40pm. Quite a difference to Brid where there is no bus to Flamborough after about 6pm.<laugh>

During the game he was trying to gee up the fans to make a noise.
Pickford has been doing his best to drive the crowd(and the players in front of him) throughout our 4 games, credit to him for that.BUT,he then did a stupid rolling around, celebratory type thing before the end of last-nights game and spoiled his previous efforts...

We got away with one last-night.

At times we laid siege on their goal but simply because we were behind and 'needed' a goal.We got it,then another, then took our foot off the gas?We need to attack this tournament from now on,we could win it but if not we need to at least go out with our heads held high.

I noticed when he celebrated the goal, he did some sort of 'shut your mouth' action at the crowd.

Drops average-to-cack performances against minnow nations then shushes the crowd when he scores a decent goal in injury time.

I just think it’s incredibly cringe. The mature thing to do was celebrate with relief and passion and then say after the game ‘we didn’t play our best, we know that, but we’re through to the quarter-finals and now we just need to prepare for the game against Switzerland’. The attitude and comments by some of the players and Southgate post-match are really cringe and defensive. Not just after last night but after the group stage games as well. It’s not the fans’ fault they’ve been woeful.

"Prepare for Switzerland" - Hopefully that means some seemingly undroppable players are left out - namely Foden and Saka. Sit back against the Swiss and they'll do to us what they did to Italy. Time to give Palmer and Gordon a start with Bellingham behind Kane. Fight fire with fire and take the game to them.
More likely Southgate will go with his favourites (despite 4 poor performances) and we will go out with a whimper :emoticon-0132-envy:

Ironside was better.. The character Brian Potter from Phoenix Nights was modelled on him with the use of the wheelchair as a prop.

Much preferred Perry Mason. In those days when people didn’t travel much programmes giving glimpses of America with big cars with dashboard mounted automatic gear shifts were fascinating. Bore no relation to how many of the population were living but nothing wrong with a bit of escapism.

Same.
Massively underrated region .... and hopefully it stays that way :emoticon-0105-wink:
Warkworth, Alnwick, Alnmouth, Amble, Beadnell, Bamburgh, Budle Bay, Seahouses ....
Fantastic place to holiday, especially if you have a dog (beaches).
Minds't you, was in Brid yesterday and that deserves far more credit too. Was up Sewerby end down to North promenade. Stunning. Usually do South side and out to Wilsthorpe, Fraisthorpe (Cow Shed). I've been most places in England and I'd honestly say it takes some beating. Just needs the centre to continue to improve!!

That one where he was laid on the floor wagging his head up and down, anyone would think he'd just done a worldy. He caught the ball a catch me mam could have made.
