I've got no doubts about Bellingham because he simply oozes class but doubts linger over Foden, will he be yet another England player who's better for club than country? Come on Foden, take the stage young man.

Fair comment....Problem is Southy plays Foden on the left wing. A left winger he isn't.. Even me, who has never coached in my life, can see that...Play him alongside or slightly behind Kane or Watkins or Toney and you'd get the best from him. When did Pep G. ask him to play on the wing? Answers on a stamp please.
Foden will never look his best being played in a position that isn't his natural one. Imo the balance of the team is wrong if Southgate plays his favourite formation and then plays both foden and Jude.
Foden has played a large proportion of his club football on the left wing, and done really well there.
I think his biggest problem for England is simply that he hasn't yet had enough of the ball in good positions. Against Serbia we didn't have enough of the ball and didn't get our attackers on it near their penalty area often enough. Foden is a quality player; give him a few opportunities to pick a pass or shoot and he'll deliver.
Southgate does look like he wants them to be fluid and rotate so when Foden finds himself in the number 10 he has to produce.
Thing is it doesn't look fluid at all, I just don't think the balance is there for us ATM. Hopefully it clicks tonight onwards
Your definition of a left winger is a tad different to mine...Ian Butler was a left winger....Foden isn't a Ian Butler type of player. i think most of his goals, if analysed, will be him getting the box inside the box or marginally outside, then coming in, playing a wall pass, getting it back then slipping it in, or beating a player then shooting.
TBH I'd be more inclined to play Palmer tonight or Gordon or both...
No one's saying he's an Ian Butler type. But he plays on the left for Man City quite often and finds himself in good scoring positions from there. He can do the same for England. Other countries have won tournaments with central players playing on the left wing. Iniesta and Ozil are two examples. The Athletic did a good article on it the other day. With England we always obsess over selection decisions that look atypical on paper, whether they're really causing a problem or not, and it often detracts from discussing the things that actually happened.
