Not to say we should ignore the fact that he wasn't up to it in the PL, but considering our entire team was crap (excluding JWP) in the PL, I don't think we should write anyone off as not being PL quality based on that

The team and confidence aspect should not be ignored, if the whole team is not performing well then low morale plays a big factor on a player's individual performance and conversely if the team as a whole knows its role and is playing well then it's harder to pick out someone who is below par.

Admittedly, I didn’t watch a lot of the last ten games or so, so he may have improved but after seeing him on tv and in the flesh looking leggy and wayward…. I worry he is way too lightweight for the Prem…
 
Last season in the Premier League IMO you can discount anyone’s performance as they had to work under two different managers and Nathan Jones. After a season like that it is a miracle that any of them could function as footballers, let alone step up like they did.

Hats off to RM for getting players like Arma, Smallbone and Aribo to play like they did. Going into the new season with momentum, confidence and a settled manager will help them.

Come on, you have to name drop Selles in that. He was just as bad as Jones, and to be fair, Ralph was no better towards the end. Ralph should have gone months prior, Jones shouldn’t have been hired, and nor should Selles.

Yeah Selles was arguably worse than Jones.

Presided over the worst result in our entire history in terms of league position.

Come on man that's just your confirmation bias. There's no way a bloke who was in charge for less than a third of our games is entirely responsible for the poor season.

I think the point being made, and one that I certainly subscribe to is this;

When Jones was appointed, we had a very good chance of staying up. His short reign destroyed the squad, morale and confidence.

Once he was sacked, although mathematically possible, it was just a case of waiting for the inevitable drop regardless of who we appointed. That's how fractured and broken the squad was.

Yeah I remember on here people saying appoint Selles after we beat Chelsea as we were down anyway and had nothing to lose. Pretty sure it was February <laugh>

I disagree with very good chance of staying up. We didn't have that as soon as the window closed imo.

Didn't buy a striker, sold our best midfielder, and put an untested kid in goal who's nowhere near good enough.

Those decisions ****ed us before Ralph was even sacked as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully we make similar poor decisions next season :biggrin:

I agree to an extent, and its certainly a valid argument; though bearing in mind Jones was appointed early November, before a mid season break AND a transfer window - that should've given him (and the club) ample enough time to turn that around and fix the mistakes made in the summer window. They didn't. By the time Selles turned up, it was over.

Yeah the January transfer window is probably a better point actually. If we'd have got that right we'd have possibly had a better chance.

Instead we spent £40m on Sulemana and Onuachu...

Don't forget £11m on Orsic as well :huh:

I still laugh at £22m on Sulemana though, at least Onuachu had a good goal scoring record to justify the price tag (albeit it hasn't worked out for us here)

I just think football fans have major swings from week to week which you don’t see in other areas of life. Obviously everyone who posts or reads regularly cares enough to spend their time on here so some are affected more than others.

Look at this season, some people made 180 turns a handful of times throughout the season about Martin, and are currently in “he is good” setting.

Last season was obviously **** and constant losses obviously grinds down a fan base, have it all to look forward to again next season <diva>

****ing hell Orsic. Forgot about him.

£50m spent on players that January with basically nothing to show for it.

Sulemana was a crazy singing and can't believe we spent that much on a player not good enough for championship.

Signed a worse Edozie for double the fee basically.

After the high of Wembley, I'm so meh and indifferent about next season already.
