Only just remembered that Gary appeared and scored at my first away game, the 1-5 victory at Coventry in 1998.

I don't usually get upset over the deaths of those I don't know personally, but this one's got me down :(

Bit unfair calling him selfish when we have no idea what happened or what drove him to take his own life.
Even though it sounds a bit inappropriate, for all we know he could of been off his rocker on something when he did it.

Whatever happened, he'll always be remembered as a true legend in the football world.

Coming from someone who knew two people who have taken their own lives, to say it was 'selfish' or that the person had a such a great life really simplifies not just the situation, but the human mind as well. Obviously we don't know why it had happened, but it's more than likely Gary saw no other option; I guess he was suffering from depression. Suicide is an absolutely tragedy and it must be horrible for all involved in this. This incident brings back bad memories for me and brings back that scare that whatever someone looks like on the exterior, they could be going through hell on the inside.

Really going to take a while for me to come to terms to this, and I didn't even know him. I've been numb all day, just hasn't really sunk in one bit. I can't even begin to imagine what his loved ones are going through,

That's another thing which really got to me. The way he did it. He basically left himself for his wife or even one of his kids to find him hanging there dead.

I saw something about the People running a headline about his wife finding him. Must be horrible to go through and has burned into your mind for the rest of your own life, on top of the obvious loss.

Rumours on Twitter are that he did it because The Sun were going to print a story that he was gay.

    Hope it's not true.

Free press should be only for the telling of political and matters that damn a country, not private lives. If this Sun thing is true its tragic.

It was apparently the Daily Star, not the Sun.

Not implicated in the inquiry, so still free to print all sorts of crap.

Doesn't stop them, I'd be shocked if he was gay and find it hard to believe from what both Dan Walker and Robbie Savage have said today. Full story will come out, people are jumping on bandwagons and it's disrespectful RIP Gary Speed.

Implicated in the Leveson inquiry, though, so if anything comes out of that, we may see some important changes to press regulations. Of course, the PCC have done a wonderul job *rolls eyes*

Assuming the rumours are true, whatever paper is behind it is probably the one that'll lead the condolences...

Covering the tracks if you will.

Firstly, R.I.P Gary Speed, it's tough to take. Grew up watching him in our midfield.

Secondly, I partly agree with Chappaz, but I think there is much more to this than meets the eye. Savage, his mate, knew nothing was wrong. He was on Football Focus and then watched football with his mates yesterday afternoon and evening. He would have left Old Trafford about 5 at the earliest, and was found dead 14 hours later. He has been talking openly about wanting to lead Wales to the World Cup. He wanted to see his kids grow up. He doesn't sound like someone who wanted to take his life. Police are saying this isn't suspicious, it's not at all straight forward.

    ****ing tossers. ****ing, ****ing tossers.

The press in this country are a ****ing joke. If that's really the case - if that's all it was - then the tabloids should be banned. For the good of humanity.

It has all the hallmarks of manic depression, by the sounds of it. A sudden, huge & violent mood swing on Saturday night, pushes him too far. Manic depression is more dangerous than clinical depression - mostly you can't tell somebody's got it, e.g. Stephen Fry.
