Evening folks, as this season draws to a close I think now is a good time to discuss the house rules. For those who have joined mid season the original rules where drawn up by us original members and were for the benefit of the whole board.

Things obviously change so its probably best we check. What are your opinions on the House rules and what would you like changed, basically:

-Rules added
-Rules removed
-Rules altered
-General opinions

If you don't feel comfortable saying something out loud PM a mod, and if you want to be anonymous PM me or another mod and we'll say it on your behalf.

This is not a thread to bitch about members, its about making the forum a better place for all. I'll paste the current rules below for those who can't be bothered with two windows :p

Cheers,

Bright :police:

It seems some members have pushed their luck. In return you get reminded of the (now updated) house rules. Please follow them if you wish for this forum to succeed:

===================================================================

A while ago we had the house rules up, they were taken down as the forum was going well so we assumed things could just run their course. Since we have a lot of new traffic here I've decided to repost the rules for the remainder of the season.

Firstly Not606 is a Fresh Start for everyone. This means any grievances you may have with other members should be left at the door. So far everyone has been given a fresh start and this has allowed our forum to grow healthily. Insulting fellow Not606'ers is not welcome here and any insulting posts will be removed. If you are unable to post without insulting members then you will be shown the door.

House rules:

-Play nice! Try and be civil to everyone
-Respect everyone's opinions even if you disagree
-Please avoid personal insults ### Any post with an insult towards another member, regardless of its quality, will be removed ###
-No WUM articles (See definition below)
-No accusing people of being WUMs or Trolls just because their opinion differs to yours.
-Where you make heavy use of material from elsewhere, please say where it came from.
-No Spam posting - meaning repeatedly posting the same content, making multiple threads, or repeatedly advertising a website/service
-Refrain from posting new threads when an existing thread covers the same topic.
-No Racism or other forms of discrimination
-No slanging matches with other users. Either report them or Ignore them!

Wum Articles

A WUM article is any article aimed at provoking a reaction from other users of the forum. Any article containing attacks on an individual, whether a figure in the sport or forum member, is a WUM article. To avoid this, when stating something controversial, please make sure you use some sort of reasoning and logic, ideally with some facts.

On breaking the rules:

Every case will be viewed independently by all 3 mods.

The ignore function:

Sometimes there will be someone who you simply can not see eye to eye with. Debate is always good but sometimes a line can be crossed without the house rules being broken. There is a way round this!
Click on the persons profile and then under their avatar you can press "add to ignore list". This will make all of their comments invisible to you like they where never there.
Ignore list
Of course if you feel a member is being problematic then a message to a Mod could also be advisable.

Play nice folks!
and remember, Any post with an insult towards another member, regardless of its quality, will be removed

Whilst I appreciate the work that the Moderation Team do, I think the forum would benefit from a more 'proactive' Moderation approach.

Please delete more of the anti-Schumacher comments. The anti-Schumacher brigade say some horrible things about him and nothing is ever done about it.

The same should apply to other drivers.

I take it you mean at a personal level? Or just general racing put downs? (or both)

My tip would be to keep doing what you're doing. Moderating a board is a thankless task and not necessarily a fun one. Nothing seems too out of shape here and you guys do a fair job of dealing with situations as they crop up. So thanks for that.

Dang... I sound like such a Billy Brown Tongue....

Pull your finger out and sort this place out you bunch of slacking bar stewards! It's going to the dogs! :p

There will always be rule breakers and at times we all push the limits of what is acceptable.

So far the place is doing fine. Too much moderation and you end up with the sanitised world of the old bbc606 which I doubt anyone wants. Too little moderation and you end up with a free for all slag fest.

I would agree with Forza in deleting any anti-driver comments that are of either a personal nature to that driver, or the poster, but do not delete general anti-driver comments as everyone is allowed their opinion on a driver.

Also, to try and balance it out so each driver gets the same level of attention/posts etc would be like having a year round party political broadcast. So as long as we don't go back to the WUMming days of someone constanly making ridiculous threads about a particular driver, I see no issues.

Keep up the good work boys

It is about time, I will be glad to see a fresh start in 2012 and a clear mind for every user.
I myself will refresh and revitalize after a tough 2011 ;)
All 24 drivers need to be treated the same, no matter what happened in the past. We are all human (us and the drivers).

Yeah guys, just keep doing what you're doing. People say they want more posts moderated but don't listen to them. Because if you moderate just a tiny bit more, all of a sudden it's too much and people will claim the board is more watered down than Eau Rouge, so yeah, keep doing what you're doing now <ok>

Once established, priorities must then be observed. This requires each and every member to take an active role in making this ship easier for the moderation team to steer.

A minor point first

What I think may need a little more attention is the merging of multiple-threads of an identical theme. This can sometimes be difficult with emotive subjects where members want to make their point but do not do sufficient research to see that a thread along the same lines already exists. It should therefore be a priority for all members to first consider if there is a thread where their topic or point of view would fit. And only after they find no such thread exists, should they consider a starting a new thread.
- - -
Now, I'd like to speak of something which has a much higher priority…

Some nice words Eternal, and obviously well-intended.

However, there is the practical problem of striking the right balance without alienating anyone. In practice, this becomes impossible unless some very firm ground has already been established, which brings me to this point:

• So long as presented in a manner which is not personalised at other members of the forum, opinion is not something for moderation to become involved with, regardless of 'balance'. For a start, there can be no means by which any 'fair' balance is struck - because deciding what is a fair balance requires the judgement of opinion itself! In this sense, the members of any debate are the essence of what balances it.
But your post brings me to the most important consideration for any forum…
By emphasising and reinforcing this, any such group (including a forum) can eventually become virtually self-governing, but only after this goal is observed by a majority of members, who, regardless of perceived allegiances, speak out with a sense of unity when someone is way out of order. It is therefore vitally important that everyone is aware of what 'out of order' actually means, so that members gradually sing in harmony.

Unfortunately, until this majority gathers sufficient momentum to need only small input for occasional guidance, it first needs strong leadership to shake it down and then to steer a steady course. Only after this can the 'auto-pilot' of self-governance be engaged. By example, we recently had the return of a disruptive character whose behaviour is illegal. Unfortunately some of the responses appeared to fuel his(?) fire. Fortunately, this was dealt with before it mushroomed into a very much worse problem for the whole forum, because it put the forum in breach of the law and could have brought about its demise for us all, including MalteseMick who runs the whole site! And this is exactly what the disruptive person has declared a wish to do!!

Any such behaviour (with extreme language used in a manner inconsistent with the laws of this country) needs to be jumped on immediately by the first person who sees it. Absolutely no tolerance should be shown. If you see such behaviour, immediately notify the whole moderation team and get the thread closed and removed from view. This will automatically cause the moderation team to consider action against the disruptive element.

I have no wish to be associated with a forum which allows illegal behaviour, even if it is never presented to legal authority. But as soon as such behaviour appears to be being tolerated, it brings the whole place down and can rapidly lead to a loss of quality, which is simply begging for disaster isn't it?

Please don't let it happen.

Thanks cosicave, hopefully we will all take that on board. The 2011 F1 season is over and as fans we all have a lot of changes to look forward to (or not look forward to) and I cant wait to discuss these with you guys. And thats what this forum is all about. Not tearing apart another user because they have a different view.

With a little decorum we can maintain this forum as the #1 post 606 F1 forum which we are all proud to be a member of and spend most of our working hours chatting the sport we love.

Ah! but IF a thread is quickly closed down and removed - the rest of the members will not witness the offender's guilt..

Exactly!
By this means, such behaviour will become less evident in the first place, which leads to an improved 'norm' of what is acceptable.

• People do not throw litter in Switzerland; not even its visitors from the UK!

To put it another way, children only run riot when they know that it is consistent with a norm, even if they (have been allowed to) create the norm! This is why early parental guidance is so important.
