I digress from the tea party slightly to discuss accompaniments. there's the full cream tea or afternoon tea crusts off of course, a slice of cake maybe, a slice of Mrs Jab's carrot and pistachio is very nice, the cream cheese icing has a liberal dash of vanilla and bourbon essence in it.
I can recommend Acres Down tea room in the New Forest near Minstead
Great setting scones jam cream and breakfast tea
Cakes generous but I like my lemon drizzle to sizzle and theirs is a bit subtle for me

You have now opened the scone-based floodgates on the jam first, then cream, or cream first, then jam, debate. Personally, I prefer cream first, then jam.

Interesting you consider the bergamot from Italy that gives Earl Grey its distinctive flavour to be English!

I also normally take all my caffeine on board before 1 pm, starting with a mug of Clipper Earl Grey with breakfast and then a couple of mugs of very strong Bird & Wild Espresso Blend coffee, with a drop of cold milk.

It is as English as a Hendricks Gin and Indian tonic <laugh>

Just to contribute unnecessarily to this, if you ever visit Newcastle (upon Tyne), there's a very impressive column, at the top of the main street, and the statue on top is of Earl Grey, he of tea fame.
I may not be next season a Newcastle trip will be on. For us it would be the ferry from Ijmuiden and a few days touring around the North East as well as the match, maybe up to Edinburgh Mrs Jab has never been.

Makes no sense. Jam is sticky so spread it first, then cream drops nicely on top. If you put cream first, the jam just mixes in.

For me the practical consideration makes this a no-brainer and anyone doing it the other way is being wilfully obtuse

You can spread jam on a scone with a knife, try spreading jam on cream, catastrophic mess
Try dunking jam on cream, it won't leave the spoon and if you scrape it off with a knife but its just a blob on the cream, and you're starting to get a complex cutlery sharing situation

Happy to discuss what jam though. Berry for me and ideally not the Straw kind

Nope! I'm married to a cornish maid. It is Butter first then jam then dollop cream on top, where else is cream not a topping?
