I was wondering if they were already like that, looks like a bitch of a job sanding spindles?

Also I'm guessing you have to rub it down between coats.

 

I've got spindles. One coat is my go to paint.

 

I thought that might be the case. Would you still apply a primer after the initial sanding?

Tbh I cba sanding down the existing spindles. Just the thought of it makes me want to kill myself. I'm thinking of just ripping them all out and putting in new ones and painting them.

Edit: hardest part of that seems like the mitre cut top n bottom of each which aint so bad.

Wish I had just put plain wood ones in that are varnished. Much less hassle.

 

Yeh I thought about that but then the bastrd handrail's white. That combo works well the other way round but not this way.

 

Nah not really a bother to sand em down tbh mate but time consuming and most find it tedious af doing stairs and iron stairs and gates and **** but theres a few tricks to doing it.
Drips on the edges are always the main issue.

Paint opposite sides 1st, then wipe off the excess build up on the unpainted sides with a wet cloth, let that dry and repeat on the other sides.

Basically you paint them in 2 stages. Front and back, wipe off **** and dry, then left and right and wipe off **** from front and back.



Anyone painting spindles all in one go will have **** looking drips all over the gaff.

Would you ever use paint stripper (liquid stuff I've seen in tins) instead of sanding?

 

The only tip I’ve got is avoid gloss paint on things like stair spindles as the gloss will show every imperfection. In fact most professional painters avoid gloss whenever they can as the prep to make it look nice is extremely time consuming.

 

Nah man definitely not, better off using a burner gun to strip off any paint if you wanna go back to wood.

Of you just want em smooth again to paint then just sand off any hard drips with some 40 paper and then use some 120 then paint em the way i said before, ger sone decent oaint like diamond satinwood and youll only need one coat of your liberal with it, without getting any sags and wiping any drips off the edges.

Fine lines between a good looking staircase and a **** one.

Really though the best tip is Once you've finished painting keep going back every 10 mins for about half hour and check the edges for drips and flat parts for sags, any you see just brush upwards with the same brush but dont add any paint to it and you should be good.
Charge yourself about 800 for it (per landing)

 

Doing some artistic upscaling of some items i was gonna chuck out anyway. This is just a tester cos ive got a nice wooden mirror frame i might do this with if this turns out okay



I think it looks cool already, ive got some other colours to add too for when the white dries, the taped up bit in the inside is a mirror btw
