It's not as simple as whether they're just good, or just bad.
As far as their defensive record, I might be wrong but generally it's been very good. Apart from the game against Barca, they've had one of the best defenses in La Liga. That said, Real have never been the same defensively since Hierro and Makelele left. They have this inherent ability to panic when put under pressure, but as I said, they're still good defensively despite that.
Attacking wise, in La Liga nobody can say that Real Madrid haven't been playing sweeping, attacking football under Mourinho. The first couple of games under Mourinho they were dull, but since then they have attacked attacked attacked so fair play to Mourinho there. HOWEVER, having said that, his tactics in the first half against Lyon tonight was typical of Mourinho. In important games, he resorts to playing a functional game, trying to nullify the other team rather than going out there to win against teams Real should be looking to beat.
