Seriously, why? They have done nothing in Europe for years, were smashed by Barcelona this season and are massively over reliant on Ronaldo. Mourinho takes over and suddenly people are falling over themselves to praise this "excellent" Real Madrid team. What a lod of nonsense!
They have great players but they don't make that a great a team. As good as they are going forward they're very open at the back, something I expected Mourinho to have sorted out. That said, maybe he will have more impact in that area next year like he did with Milan. It can take time to get a team to play how you want them to and you also have to get to know the players.
Will Real Madrid give him time? They normally sack their manager after 6 months if they haven't won everything in site. People look at the money they have spent and the big names and they automatically assume that they are a great team. People seem to ignore their performances and poor results.
It's not as simple as whether they're just good, or just bad. As far as their defensive record, I might be wrong but generally it's been very good. Apart from the game against Barca, they've had one of the best defenses in La Liga. That said, Real have never been the same defensively since Hierro and Makelele left. They have this inherent ability to panic when put under pressure, but as I said, they're still good defensively despite that. Attacking wise, in La Liga nobody can say that Real Madrid haven't been playing sweeping, attacking football under Mourinho. The first couple of games under Mourinho they were dull, but since then they have attacked attacked attacked so fair play to Mourinho there. HOWEVER, having said that, his tactics in the first half against Lyon tonight was typical of Mourinho. In important games, he resorts to playing a functional game, trying to nullify the other team rather than going out there to win against teams Real should be looking to beat.
What is there to ignore? Trophies won over the past few seasons? No. Great European Performances? No.
Madrid have been very entertaining at times this season, but mainly against some very charitable La Liga defences. It almost seems that there is an unwritten law in Spain that you're not allowed to make a serious effort to take the ball off Messi or Ronaldo.
Real Madrid's situation and Man City's is quite similar at the moment. They've both spent ridiculous amounts of money but have to deliver. A load of world class players does not form a winning team.
Yeah admitadley it is a bit of a bummer when you get 97 points in a league season but unfortunatley have the worlds greatest ever club side in front of you. Also how many other teams got 16 points in cl group stages? We had the most two bob group ever and not even we could do that.
Or maybe they just literally cant? I think the other day against Bilbao I saw one of the most amazing runs I have ever seen, from messi, how he got through the players was sheer unbeleivable.
But both are improving. And chelsea spending a heap load of cash in 03 seemed to turn out very well for them. I dont think mancini is the right guy for city though.
Real Madrid got spanked 5 0 by Barcelona this season, they haven't got past the first knockout stage of the Champions League in 6 years and I can't remember the last time they beat one of the top sides in Europe. They are massivley overated because are blinded by the amount of money they spend and the big names.
Whats the last 6 years gotta do with anything, they have only spent massive in the last 2 years. And clearly if they didnt have the best club side ever in front of them would be doing very well. It has clearly improved them. Overrated teams dont get 97 points I am afraid despite whatever your very wrong opinion is.
Then why have their European performances been rubbish? Last season they were poor and got knocked about by Lyon who are a decent side but hardly great. They got thrashed by Barcelona this season and when Ronaldo doesn't perform they usually slip up.
They got thrashed by Barca because they are the greatest club side ever and on their day can do that to anyone. Of course they are relying on ronaldo, they have lost their main striker to injury. Lyon are a very good side, and if your saying spending money doesnt help then the only teams to spend more than lyon in the last couple of years were city and Madrid. Lyon did what they had to do.
