Seen him and his film crew down roker a few years ago one tea time. he was doing a show on hidden places to eat ect. Nice bloke and had time to chat on the sand right next to the pier. We let him get on with his work after a few minutes as they had gotten the shot they needed at the lighthouse but the light was getting poor so needed to crack on. Nice bloke.
Yes mate sorry, tried to add a footnote but summat went wrong...... Great turnout for the miners wives, despite the horrendous rain, very emotional day remembering 40 years ago, some of these ladies are solid gold.
Seen it on the news, looked a good turn out. Love to see the colliery banners, my wife is a proud "coal miners daughter".
I remember that time vividly as it shaped me into the man I am today. My dad was a striking miner and my mam was prominent within the Women for miners support group The bit about school and the shoes struck a chord with me only it was not shoes but trousers as mine were no good and the only pants I had left were jeans so I went to school in them, only to be place in front of the whole senior school assembly and be singled out by the then head teacher for not wearing appropriate uniform. As I lived in a predominantly mining area and the colliery at Boldon had recently been closed tensions were obviously high during the strike and money was also very tight, so when the head teacher of the school singled me out and then proceeded to ask me what my excuse for turning up to school in un- authorised attire (his words) I proudly said that my parents did not have the money to buy new uniform as my dad had been on strike for 7 months. This obnoxious cretin of a man/teacher then declared to the school that this is what happens when the masses take liberties with the government and ignore the rules of society. Obviously my Dad was not too happy with this situation when I got home and explained what had happened, and he then marched me back up to the school and demanded to speak to the head teacher. that discussion became a little heated and my Dad (who had struggled with literacy due to poor schooling, a tough childhood and leaving school at 14 to work in the mines) tore strip after strip away from this so called educated man and by the time he had finished I received a full apology on the day and a further apology at the following morning assembly. My dad knew his stuff and that day I was as proud as any day I could remember in my then young life and it taught me a valuable lesson. you can be smart and intellectual without being highly educated and you can also be Highly educated and dumb. Education and intellect do not always walk hand in hand and I think a lot of people and companies forget that. Anyway just my little story from a memory stirred up from this article.
Day 175, and really fancied a beer tonight. Got to say, this is bloody lovely...£2.99 for 6 at Aldi. If I didn't know, I would never guess it was alcohol free.
Kind of, in a roundabout way. Needed to lose 3kg (preferably 5kg) to donate a kidney. My wife needs one but our blood groups arent compatible, so we're on a kidney sharing scheme. I donate one to someone who is a match, and their partner donates one to my wife...it all relies on the matching. Had loads of tests and of of the things they found was the onset of "non-alcohol fatty liver", and they recommended cutting down. So just stopped, didnt want anything to get in the way of doing it. Lost 10kg now so all systems go now, they're happy with everything now. Next database matching is in April, hopefully we have a match.
Fantastic marra, God bless you and your wife. Good to share these testimonies as it gives hope to others who may find themselves in a similar situation. Also bigs-up how good our health service is. Blessings
Legend. Really mate, hats off. I'm under a nephrologist (oo-er Mrs) and my kidneys are running at about 50% but decreasing all the time so will need intervention sooner rather than later.
Hopefully they stabilise and don't drop too far. The Mrs was around the 19/20 Mark for around 9 years. NYD 2023 they just about gave up, had a siezure, blue lighted to UHND, transferred after 5 days to the Freeman, kidney function down to 7%. Been on dialysis ever since, which we now do at home. Bit of a steep learning curve on how to do it, and a bit daunting at first, but we got there. Has it Mon, wed, and Friday, 3 hour sessions.
See now this is important stuff that means everything. Football is all pointless ****e when you read stuff like this. Cap well and truly doffed to you and your good lady and I will have a little prayer a donor can be found
