Off Topic Society needs a reset

Im about to get on my soap box - and would agree with the majority of the comments.

Respect for each other.
Eradicate the entitlement culture. That's a big one for me with younger people at the moment.
If you do the crime spend the time.
Make policing...just policing! Not a job that ties you up in paperwork.
Make it that when a schoolteacher, a policeman, a neighbour, or any honest person caught you doing something wrong (and we've all been there) a kid crapped his pants at the thought of his/her parents finding out.
Make it so teachers can discipline properly and more importantly appropriately.
Make it so that kids aren't minimalised and sidelined if they don't want to get a degree in windsurfing just to have a degree.
Make it so that kids are happy with a football, a bike, a skipping rope, a game of hide and seek - mobiles and new trainers suck.
Make it so that politicians (across all parties) are responsible for these results.
Make it so that young people are encouraged to be self-employed, entrepreneurs, innovators: get the tax system to encourage reward for that.
Make it also that if someone does great things because they are from a wealthy background, let's applaud them too. They're not all bad.
Make it that we teach people that some people who do well have taken risk, and made sacrifice - let's congratulate them and not be bitter.
Make it so that kids who are talented in certain areas are developed in those areas and not vilified because they aren't good at maths or another "valuable" subject that benefits someone else - that one is personal for my daughter.
Make it so that drug offences are amongst the harshest punished - drugs **** up peoples lives. There is more spent on anti tobacco and anti drink campaigns than anti drug enforcement.
Get rid of the politically correct culture of quotas, sexuality, gender and nationality in the workplace - if someone is good enough then they get the job - irrespective of imposed quotas. in my company we have 13 different nationalities, an equal gender split, and don't care about the rest. They were good enough at interview and deliver well in the workplace.
Get rid of the fear of offending others if your view is different - that's bullsh1t.


In short - if the opportunity were there for young kids to be either thugs or to earn a decent living, most would take the decent living. There will always be the badd'uns. my point is though that if we can get the above right the percentage of those ids who make the choice to be good'uns will grow and the dikkkkkheds we need to lock up will shrink

It all comes down to a lack of respect for your fellow man/woman.

I'm late 40s, but I remember being terrified of my teachers or the local copper. Not in a bad way, just in a way that I would never want to be on their wrong side.
The worst punishment of all was something that I'd done getting back to my Mum.
So, generally I behaved myself. If I saw an old lady struggling with her shopping, I'd offer to help. If there were no seats on the bus, I'd get up and offer mine to someone else.

General respect. We've lost that in our society. Now the kids are being brought up by the same people who showed no respect 20 years ago. It's cyclical.

I was in Mexico last summer and an older couple next to us (from Saltburn - my son was convinced it was Mogga ) had some health issue. The poor bloke couldn't move due to his back. I nipped up to my room to get some strong painkillers and offered them up. The woman was insistent she'd pay for them, but I refused. You help out people when you can, without need for reward or recompense. That's how I was brought up anyway, and that's how my kids are being brought up.

On the flight over, there was family sitting near me - parents plugged into their phones, with airpods in. The kid playing videos on his ipad at full volume. Parents didn't give a ****. Lack of respect.

The bit in bold is naive

There is a reason these quotas exists - centuries of discrimination. Even now, women are dismissed as "knowing nowt" by men in a lot of situations. My wife's car was damaged at work by some scaffolders. Initially they offered her £80 to get it fixed and refused to engage with her about insurance etc. Then I turned up and the conversation was serious and I was "mate" to them and we talked about getting quotes etc.

It might be casual sexism/misogyny, maybe it's more overt, but it still exists. The same for racism, homophobia etc etc. We tell ourselves we are a more enlightened society. these days, but we aren't. Remove those quotas and workplaces will be full of white, British males and the minorities won't find work.

We live in the Internet age, and gladly I was in my early 20s when it first kicked in. So I grew up with the attitude of respect the police and teachers and "I'll be seeing your Dad" if you pissed off neighbour with the ball in the street. Now, because Gen Z live on online and "influencers" are the new role models, they take their word is gospel. Same as these smart arses who film the police on their phones to try and catch them out while they're doing their jobs spouting "you can't do that, name and badge number" to then post the offercers face and name all over the Internet with no respect for possible repercussions. Probably while there's less people applying for the police because 10 year old stick phones in their faces. Society has become very self aware at a time its never been more antisocial. Look in any Caffè, restaurant etc, tables of people with their heads in their phones. The amount of 17, 18 19 year olds week end workers where I work have very very little social skills, some, not all. But they can't contain eye contact or hold a Conversation, but ask them about tiktok.... forget about it. I'm not hating on the young, everyone is a product of the times, but to get back down off my soap box, ignorance and the lack of common decency is on the decline..I. sure past generations will have always said the same

Needs to be an infrastructure of opportunity in place for people. Then no excuse for the scum.

We need to give kids a chance and support them as much as possible. You see kids with no parents or parents who drink, doss about and what chance have they got. They've probably experienced real trauma in their life so it's no surprise some of them turn out a mess. I guess it's about intervention and trying to break the cycle. Easier said than done but so many kids are dismissed as wasters when they've had an absolute hellish time of it. I've been blessed with loving family around me but others haven't been. Of course there are folk who are just ****s to the core
