Just 69, retired September 22

He played out with Queen’s Radio Ga Ga and its final lyrics: “You had your time, you had the power, you’ve yet to have your finest hour.” As the music faded, Wright said: “Those are the closing moments of Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 2.”

RIP Steve lad.

Stopped listening to him in the last few years due to his incessant “serious jocking”.
Before that, he was brilliant in the 80’s. Mr. Angry from Purley, get the geese off, Ruth McRum, fantastic.
Still was one of the better DJ’s by a long way!
Err… Show some respect. No g in jockin’

RIP in lad a big part of my growing up too. Was it Sid the manager he did? Whatever it was Mr Angry was all too funny.......was Steve Wright the dj who played Sacrifice which got Elton John his first number one?...............Steve left this Earth giving us a good laugh and great music.....god bless.

RIP Steve....When I was on the road as a rep' he made life bearable in the afternoons... You could see all the drivers who were listening as they were laughing at the same time...Brilliant presenter, be sadly missed...

My favourite character was Ask Elvis...so funny

Me too mate, it was tragic, I couldn't believe people were calling in and laughing their heads off.

Shame, he was good at what he did but that was unbearably unfunny.

I remember him on Radio Luxembourg and I then gravitated from Radio 1 to Radio 2 following the music,as I got older. However, his afternoon show became more of a magazine, the music seemed to take second place, the studio interaction with the "posse" often seeming to involve hysteria around each other, which didn't really work for me. I know lots of people liked it,though. The Sunday Love Songs thing degenerated into a farce I think....boring as hell, same old songs and messages every week....Dave in Bristol requesting a song on his 30th wedding anniversary for his loving wife Julie....giving him 2 beautiful children and a life of domestic bliss, his soulmate forever, requesting her favourite song of all time....."Breaking Up is Hard to Do"..Neil Sedaka....FFS!
He was good at what he did...not for me...but,sad to see him go.

Agree with others about the "serious jockin" thing. It was a bit like when Scrappy Doo joined Scooby Doo. Other than that he was the best DJ in my lifetime. Just enough of the funny bits like Gervais the hairdresser, Ask Elvis, Sid the manager etc to not detract from the actual records and make the working day fly by.
